『Eclipse』は、新ヴォーカリストとして、トミ・ヨーツェンを迎えたAMORPHISが、北欧的な深い陰影、フォーク由来の美しい旋律、そして重いメタル・リフとを、新しい均衡で結び付けた、極めて重要な第7作だ。ヨーツェンの、クリーンな歌と、抑えの効いたグロウルとを、自在に使い分ける、その卓越した表現力が、フィンランドの叙事詩に着想を得た、古い物語を思わせる歌詞世界に、深く豊かな起伏を与えている。バンドの、新たな黄金期の幕開けを告げる一枚である。 冒頭“Two Moons”の力強い推進力、そして、バンド最大のヒット曲となった、キャッチーな名曲“House of Sleep”まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Leaves Scar”“Born from Fire”“The Smoke”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。叙情的なギターと鍵盤は、決して曲を過度に飾るのではなく、静かな哀感と、力強い高揚とを、見事に両立させている。 AMORPHISの持つ、あの豊かな伝統を、しっかりと尊重しながらも、以後の、成熟した黄金期のスタイルを、力強く決定づけた、大きな転機となる一枚だ。ヨーツェンの加入は、バンドに、新たな安定と、飛躍とをもたらした。とりわけ“House of Sleep”の存在は、本作を、バンドの代表作の一つたらしめている。AMORPHISの、新章を開いた、極めて完成度の高い傑作と言える。バンドの新たな出発点だ。

Eclipse is an extremely important seventh album on which Amorphis, welcoming the new vocalist Tomi Joutsen, binds deep Nordic shading, beautiful folk-derived melody and heavy metal riffs in a new balance. Joutsen’s outstanding expression, freely using clean singing and restrained growls, gives deep, rich rise and fall to a lyrical world evoking old tales inspired by Finnish epics. A record announcing the opening of the band’s new golden age. From the powerful drive of the opener “Two Moons” to the catchy classic “House of Sleep,” which became the band’s biggest hit, every song is engaging, while cuts like “Leaves Scar,” “Born from Fire” and “The Smoke” convey the work’s fullness. The lyrical guitar and keyboards, by no means overly decorating the songs, beautifully unite quiet sorrow and powerful lift. A record that became a great turning point, powerfully defining the subsequent mature golden-age style while firmly respecting Amorphis’s rich tradition. Joutsen’s joining brought new steadiness and a leap to the band. In particular, the presence of “House of Sleep” makes this one of the band’s representative works.
