Am Universum

『Am Universum』は、AMORPHISが、ヘヴィなギターを、その基盤としながらも、キーボード、サックス、そしてクリーン・ヴォーカルを、極めて広く取り入れた、意欲的な第5作だ。もはや、特定のジャンルの枠に収まることよりも、楽曲が作り出す、独特の空気と、その豊かな流れとが、何よりも重視されている。サイケデリックで、プログレッシヴな要素が、より色濃く打ち出された、実験的な内容となっている。パシ・コスキネンの歌が、その世界観を、深く彩っている。 冒頭を飾る、力強い名曲“Alone”の推進力、そして“Goddess”のドラマ性、さらに“The Night Is Over”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Crimson Wave”“Forever More”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。暗く、重厚な質感の中にも、開放的で、美しい場面があり、聴き進めるほどに、その色彩が、豊かに増していく。 過去の、あのデス・メタル的な重さを、決して完全には捨て去ることなく、より広く、自由な表現へと、力強く進んでみせた、重要な転換点となる一枚だ。サックスの導入など、その大胆な実験精神が、作品に、唯一無二の個性を与えている。AMORPHISの、飽くなき探究心を示した、聴き応えのある意欲作と言える。バンドの幅広さが光る一枚だ。

Am Universum is an ambitious fifth album on which Amorphis, while keeping heavy guitar as its foundation, takes in keyboards, saxophone and clean vocals extremely widely. No longer fitting within a specific genre frame, the distinctive air the songs create and their rich flow are valued above all. Experimental content on which psychedelic, progressive elements are more strongly put forward. Pasi Koskinen’s singing deeply colors that world. From the drive of the powerful opening classic “Alone” and the drama of “Goddess” to a cut like “The Night Is Over,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Crimson Wave” and “Forever More” convey the work’s fullness. Even within a dark, weighty texture, there are open, beautiful passages, and their color richly increases the more you listen. A record that became an important turning point, powerfully moving into a broader, freer expression without ever completely discarding the old death-metal weight. Its bold experimental spirit, such as the introduction of saxophone, gives the work a one-of-a-kind character.
