『The Razors Edge』は、太いリフと新たな推進力によって、AC/DCが90年代にロックンロールの核を力強く再点火した第12作だ。数年の空白を経て発表された本作は、バンドに再び大きな商業的成功をもたらし、キャリアにおける重要な転換点となった。硬く引き締まったサウンドが、全編を貫いている。 冒頭を飾る、バグパイプを思わせる印象的なイントロが有名な“Thunderstruck”の圧倒的な推進力は、バンドの新たな代表曲となった。“Moneytalks”のキャッチーさ、“Are You Ready”の勢い、“Fire Your Guns”の疾走、そして表題曲“The Razors Edge”の重厚さまで、収録曲は多彩でありながら、AC/DCらしい一貫した強度を保っている。 派手な流行を追うのではなく、自分たちの様式を現代的な音像で更新することで、バンドは見事な復活を遂げた。シンプルなリフの強さと、大きなコーラスの魅力は、少しも失われていない。ボン・スコット期、そしてブライアン・ジョンソン加入初期に続く、“Rock Your Heart Out”“Mistress for Christmas”のような曲でも、太いリフとキャッチーなコーラスが、作品に一貫した推進力を与えている。バンドの第三の黄金期を告げた、力強く充実した復活作と言える。

The Razors Edge is the twelfth album on which AC/DC powerfully re-ignited the core of rock and roll in the 1990s with thick riffs and new drive. Released after a few years’ gap, it brought the band major commercial success again and became an important turning point in their career. A hard, tightened sound runs throughout. The overwhelming drive of the opener “Thunderstruck,” famous for its striking bagpipe-like intro, became a new signature song. From the catchiness of “Moneytalks” and the momentum of “Are You Ready” to the speed of “Fire Your Guns” and the weight of the title track “The Razors Edge,” the songs are varied yet keep a consistent, AC/DC-like strength. Rather than chasing flashy trends, the band achieved a splendid comeback by updating its own style in a modern sonic picture. The strength of simple riffs and the appeal of big choruses are not lost in the least. Announcing the band’s third golden period, following the Bon Scott era and the early Brian Johnson years, it is a powerful, fulfilling comeback record.
