『Rock or Bust』は、AC/DCが長年磨き上げてきたロックンロールの設計を、いっそう引き締まった形で提示した第16作だ。太いリズム・ギター、余計な装飾を省いたビート、そしてひと聴きで口ずさめるコーラス。そのすべてが、短く強い曲の中で、無駄なく機能している。マルコム・ヤングの脱退という大きな変化を乗り越えて制作された一枚である。 重厚な表題曲“Rock or Bust”から、軽快な“Play Ball”まで、アルバムは複雑さではなく、リフが身体を動かす瞬間そのものを、丁寧に積み重ねていく。“Rock the Blues Away”のキャッチーさ、“Dogs of War”の勢い、“Baptism By Fire”の疾走まで、収録曲はいずれも簡潔で力強い。全体の尺は短いが、その分、密度は非常に高い。 変わらないことを、停滞ではなく確固たる意志として鳴らす、バンドの尽きせぬ生命力が刻まれた作品だ。困難な状況の中でも、AC/DCらしいシンプルで力強いロックンロールの魅力は、少しも揺らいでいない。“Got Some Rock & Roll Thunder”のような曲でも、簡潔で力強いリフが徹底されている。ベテランの円熟と、変わらぬロックへの情熱を同時に感じさせる、引き締まった充実作と言える。

Rock or Bust is the sixteenth album on which AC/DC presented its long-honed rock-and-roll design in an even tighter form. Thick rhythm guitar, a beat with decoration cut away and choruses you can hum after one listen — all function without waste within short, strong songs. It is a record made overcoming the major change of Malcolm Young’s departure. From the weighty title track “Rock or Bust” to the light “Play Ball,” the album carefully stacks the very moments the riffs move the body, rather than complexity. From the catchiness of “Rock the Blues Away” and the momentum of “Dogs of War” to the speed of “Baptism By Fire,” every song is concise and powerful. The overall length is short, but its density is very high for it. It is a record that inscribes the band’s inexhaustible vitality, sounding its constancy as firm will rather than stagnation. Even in difficult circumstances, the appeal of AC/DC’s simple, powerful rock and roll does not waver in the least. Conveying a veteran’s maturity and an unchanging passion for rock at once, it is a tight, fulfilling record.
