Liner Notes
Toto XIV is the twelfth album, on which Toto depicted the appeal of mature rock and AOR using refined ensemble, rich chords and solid vocal melody. On this record after about nine years, Joseph Williams returned on vocals, Steve Porcaro on keyboards, and David Hungate on bass for the first time since Toto IV. Mike Porcaro, who long supported the band, battled ALS and passed away just before its completion. Guitar, keyboards and rhythm section each stand out, yet always sit in the position that best showcases the singing.
On songs like "Orphan" and "Unknown Soldier (for Jeffrey)," meticulous playing and rich melody unite. The latter is a song dedicated to the late Jeff Porcaro, suggesting the band's deep bonds. The lively songs have technical ease, and the ballads have deep emotion. A comeback work that reaffirms the band's strengths, where craftsman-like precision and pop approachability coexist.
