THE HAUNTED
Biography
The Haunted are a Swedish band formed in Gothenburg in 1996. The guitarist Anders Björler and the bassist Jonas Björler left At the Gates, the drummer Adrian Erlandsson and the guitarist Patrik Jensen joined them, and Jensen has been in the band from that day to this.
Formed in Gothenburg (1996- )
The band began in 1996. Century Media, their label, gives that year on its own artist page and describes the Björler brothers leaving their previous band with Erlandsson and Jensen joining them. It then took the better part of a year to find a singer.
What first took them into a studio was being approached about contributing a song to the compilation Earplugged 2. They settled on a singer after that approach came, and went from there into recording their self-titled debut.
Three records for Earache (1998-2003)
The debut album The Haunted was released by Earache in June 1998. It was recorded between November and December 1997 at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg and produced by Fredrik Nordström, with Peter Dolving singing.
The Haunted Made Me Do It, of October 2000, is the first with Marco Aro singing and Per Möller Jensen on drums. It was recorded between December 1999 and February 2000 at Berno Studio in Malmö and produced by Berno Paulsson with the band. It spent four weeks at number one on CMJ's Loud Rock Radio Chart and won a Swedish Grammy for best hard rock album, and the band later broke that record of their own with five weeks at the top.
One Kill Wonder, of 17 February 2003, took them back to Studio Fredman and to Nordström, and is their last record for Earache. Michael Amott of Arch Enemy plays the guitar solo on “Bloodletting”, and the album brought the band a second Swedish Grammy.
Century Media, and a singer who came and went (2004-2011)
From Revolver, of October 2004, the label is Century Media and Peter Dolving is back on vocals.
The Dead Eye, of 30 October 2006, was recorded at PUK Studio in Denmark in May 2006 and produced by Tue Madsen with the band. Every one of its thirteen titles begins with The; the last, “The Guilt Trip”, ends at 5:02, and after two minutes of silence the hidden track “The Exit” begins.
An extended break followed, and the band came out of it with Versus in September 2008, recorded that April at PUK Studio and IF Studios.
The material they wrote during a second break became Unseen, of 16 March 2011, recorded between October and November 2010 at Antfarm Studio in Aarhus and produced by Tue Madsen. It is the last of their records with Dolving singing, and the last with Anders Björler in the band.
The present line-up (2014- )
Exit Wounds, of 25 August 2014, brought Ola Englund in on guitar and Marco Aro and Adrian Erlandsson back after more than a decade away. Juan Urteaga produced it.
For Strength in Numbers, of 25 August 2017, they chose Russ Russell as producer over Tue Madsen, their long-time collaborator, and recorded at Parlour Studios in Kettering, England. It was also the first time they went into the studio with finished charts and pre-recorded material in hand.
Songs of Last Resort, of 30 May 2025, was produced by Jens Bogren at Studio Bohus in Kungälv, Sweden. Björn Strid of Soilwork sings on “To Bleed Out”.
Current line-up
Neither the band's own site nor their label's page lists a current line-up, so the five here are the ones credited on the newest record, Songs of Last Resort.

Three of them — The Haunted, The Haunted Made Me Do It and Versus — carry the month alone, because the English Wikipedia and the album's own MusicBrainz release group disagree about the day.
Japanese shows
The Haunted have played Japan at least four times between 1998 and 2025, and only one of those dates can be traced: 16 November 2000, at Akasaka Blitz in Tokyo. That concert became the band's first live album, Live Rounds in Tokyo (Earache, 10 December 2001), and the band's own Bandcamp page for it gives the venue and the date.
The other three — the tour with In Flames after the debut, the One Kill Wonder tour, and the 2015 tour with Exodus and Nile — are not in this site's LIVE listings, because none of the sources opened for this page gives their dates.
A note on sources
The facts here come from Century Media Records' own artist page for The Haunted (how the band started, the Earplugged 2 approach, the 2014 line-up, the change of producer for Strength in Numbers), from the band's own Bandcamp page for Live Rounds in Tokyo (the venue and date of the Tokyo concert), from the English Wikipedia articles for the band and for each album (release dates, labels, studios, producers, personnel and charts), from MusicBrainz release data (the original pressings' running orders) and from Spotify embed data (identifying the albums). All were read on 28 September 2026. The label's page is not used for years: it dates One Kill Wonder to 2004 and Revolver to 2005, where Wikipedia and MusicBrainz agree on 2003 and 2004.
Trivia
The Haunted’s first live album, Live Rounds in Tokyo, is a Japanese concert recorded whole. The band’s own Bandcamp page gives the recording as Akasaka Blitz in Tokyo on 16 November 2000; the record itself came out on Earache on 10 December 2001.
The Haunted began in 1996, when the guitarist Anders Björler and the bassist Jonas Björler left their previous band. The drummer Adrian Erlandsson and the guitarist Patrik Jensen joined them, and it then took the better part of a year to find a singer.
What first took the band into a studio was being approached about contributing a song to the compilation Earplugged 2. They settled on a singer after that approach came, and went from there into recording their self-titled debut.
Ola Englund joined on guitar for Exit Wounds in 2014, the same record that brought the singer Marco Aro and the drummer Adrian Erlandsson back after more than a decade away. That line-up is still the one on Songs of Last Resort in 2025.
For Strength in Numbers in 2017 the band chose Russ Russell as producer over Tue Madsen, their long-time collaborator. It was also the first time they went into the studio with finished charts and pre-recorded material already in hand.
A greatest-hits set, Warning Shots, came out in 2009, and the live album Road Kill followed in 2010. Road Kill was drawn from their 2009 tour and came with a DVD of the show.
The band took an extended break after The Dead Eye in 2006 and came back out of it with Versus in 2008. Another break followed, and the material they wrote during it became Unseen in 2011.
The Haunted Made Me Do It, from 2000, spent four weeks at number one on CMJ’s Loud Rock Radio Chart, and the band later broke that record of their own with five weeks at the top.
