LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
Last of Our Kind, the fourth album, came out first in Japan, on 27 May 2015 from Hostess Entertainment (HSE-60211, with notes by Masanori Ito). In Britain the band's company Canary Dwarf released it with Kobalt Label Services on 1 June (CND001CD). It was written in Ireland and recorded at Dan Hawkins's studio at Leeders Farm in Norfolk, with Dan producing, as Blabbermouth and Rolling Stone reported. Justin Hawkins told Classic Rock it was brutal and stripped back apart from some mandolins: medieval rock, as he put it. Ed Graham had left in 2014, and the drums on the record are by Emily Dolan Davies, who had played with Bryan Ferry and Tricky. She made her live debut with the band on 6 March 2015 and left in April, her last appearance being the video for "Open Fire". Her successor was Rufus Taylor, son of Queen's Roger Taylor, who first played with them at a release party at Gibson in London on 24 April (Blabbermouth). The opening "Barbarian" tells how Ivar the Boneless's Great Heathen Army overran East Anglia in the ninth century and Edmund the Martyr was killed, as the official site describes it. The title song carries a choir of fans gathered over the internet, and on the closing "Conquerors" the bassist Frankie Poullain sings lead for the first time (Songfacts). The album reached number 12 in Britain, number 1 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart and 125 on the Billboard 200, and a deluxe edition with four bonus tracks followed in November. As of 6 October 2026 none of its tracks will play on Spotify in this territory, so this page shows the sleeve instead of a player. The running order here is the original's as printed.
