What the name means is stated in one line on the band's official YouTube channel: STMLT is stimulate. The same block carries their stated aim — to take the world as a girls band crossed with a YouTube act — and the date they started posting videos, 4 June 2022. Their first original song, as it happens, was titled "Shigeki": stimulus.
The band's official X profile packs its self-description and its goal into one line: a girl-group YouTube act crossed with a girls band, videos at seven in the evening, aiming for the gold plaque — the award YouTube sends at a million subscribers. The same line records what their fans are called: Volts.
The lyrics to "Shigeki," their first original song, were written by Ecchan — the YouTuber who was producing the band at the time. Per the official video's description, kabukin536 composed it, Jun Miyajima arranged and mixed it, and Tora Amano directed the clip. It went up on 12 November 2022 and later opened the first EP.
STMLT began in June 2022. Assembled by audition, the five members posted a video every day while running a band alongside it — a YouTube channel and a group that plays, driven in parallel. By October 2023, about fifteen months in, the channel had passed 230,000 subscribers.
The order was the reverse of a normal band's. When they first got into a rehearsal room — after the audition results were out and the line-up announced — not everyone was an experienced player, and those who were had been away from it for a while. Looking back, guitarist Kirara says that in pure skill terms it was rough, and that even so it fitted. The first job was simply getting used to shooting, editing and posting a video every day; the first show, they had decided, would wait until the performance was actually worth watching.
Their first show came in July 2023, billed as STMLT 1st Live: 100,000 Volts. Tickets sold out the moment they went on sale. The word that gives the band's fans their name — volt — was there in the title of the very first one.
The first EP, STMLT, released on 20 September 2023, holds six tracks in this order: "Shigeki," "Tsuikyu," "Inazuma," "TWILIGHT," "dream walker" and "AnimaZ." They named the record after the band.
The tour's opening night had a prologue. The day before Kawasaki, the band played EMERGE FEST. 2024, a festival in Taiwan — the first time they had performed outside Japan. They landed back in Japan and reached the hotel at one in the morning on the day of the show, and slept about three hours. Before that the dress rehearsal had run to three or four in the morning; as Yukippe puts it, it was not two days but something more like four compressed into one, with almost no sleep in them. In Taiwan the crowd had been thin at the start and filled in once they began — enough, she says, to convince them that what they played worked in another country, and they carried that into the opening night.
On 29 May 2024 it was announced that Ayanon, on keyboards and harsh vocals, and Gomichan, on drums, would leave at the end of June. The final night of the STMLT STORMBREAKER JAPAN TOUR then in progress — Kanazawa AZ on 22 June — became that line-up's last show. Each of the two posted a statement on her own account.
On the same day, 30 May 2024, the band opened a call for new members. The conditions ran to three lines: any instrument, any nationality, and — as they put it — any gender, provided the heart is a maiden's. How many people they would take was left open, and applications went through a LINE account set up for it.
On 4 August 2024 the band promoted its own show for the first time, at KT Zepp Yokohama, billed as the STMLT Revival Festival: LIGHTNING REBIRTH. After Ayanon and Gomichan left, the remaining three — Yukippe, Kirara and Akira — had kept posting videos while they looked for replacements; Sakitee on drums, Hanon on keyboards and Kanachi on harsh vocals came in, making six. This was that line-up's first time on a stage. Okosama Plate, FR2PON! and BAD IVY played too.
On 25 September 2024 STMLT announced they were pausing. Three scheduled shows — Shizuoka on 6 October, Kumagaya on 20 October and Saitama-Shintoshin on 14 December — were cancelled. DreamARK, the company running the group, addressed the speculation that had spread from members' posts: the failure to absorb the grievances the members had been carrying was, it said, entirely the management's fault, and it apologised. It also asked people to stop defaming members on the basis of speculation, and said it would respond to such acts including by legal means. Members would continue posting and streaming individually during the pause, and already-filmed videos would go up irregularly.
On 28 November 2024 it was announced that the singer, Yukippe, was leaving STMLT and that her contract with DreamARK was being terminated. Three shows set for the new year — Tokyo, Kyoto and Nagoya — were cancelled, and the hiatus would continue until the band could resume properly. No reason was given for either the departure or the termination, and the management again asked people not to defame members on the basis of speculation.
How long the band had been stopped became clear when the next song arrived. In June 2025 the video for "ZENTSUPPA" went up — their first new song in ten months. Hina Kamio guested on vocals, and it was announced she would appear on both days of their shows that August.
On 23 January 2026 STMLT premiered a video on YouTube announcing that a new singer had arrived, and introduced Mofchan as lead vocalist. She posted that she was delighted to be working with the group and intended to make it better still. The band's account marked the day by listing all five members' handles. A tour of the Kanto region was announced at the same time.
"SiLENT KiLLER," released on 2 May 2026, was a marker for the new line-up. Kanachi wrote the lyrics, and it was the first song sung by Mofchan, who had joined as lead vocalist that January. A companion video went up alongside the promo — a guide to how to move to it.
The line-up has turned over almost completely; the credits have not. kabukin536, who composed "Shigeki" in November 2022, is again among the composers on "SiLENT KiLLER" in May 2026, and Tora Amano directed both videos. Nearly three and a half years separate the two songs, and the same names are on them.
Yukippe, the band's first singer, had never been near rock or metal and had never performed live at all. At the start she simply could not headbang, and the others let her know it. By their own account, though, the abuse ran only through rehearsals: before a show they switched to telling each other it was going to be great, and walked on from there. Gomichan's comment is that it made her think they were good people to be with.
Gekirock ran a series in which STMLT sat down with bands ahead of them. The first, on 24 November 2023, was with TRiDENT; the second, that December, with Ailiph Doepa; the third, in January 2024, with a crowd of rebellion.
There was work outside the music too. A collaboration with GEKIROCK CLOTHING, the rock-fashion shop Gekirock runs, brought the members into the Shibuya store on 27 January 2024 to run it for a day. Items had to be reserved in advance; the point was that you collected them from the band in person.
"EVOL AI," released in January 2024, has lyrics by the band's singer, Yukippe.
Their first national headline tour, STMLT STORMBREAKER JAPAN TOUR, opened at CLUB CITTA' in Kawasaki on 25 February 2024 and ran to eight dates: Fukuoka, Sendai, Okayama, Kyoto, Saitama, Nagoya and Kanazawa.
In July 2024 Gekirock started a column by guitarist Kirara, titled roughly "Kirara's rock things to do before I die." The premise is that she works through whatever she personally considers a rock thing to do. Instalment one was an ASMR video of eating an entire salmon.
The first song from the new line-up was "Antimental," which went up for streaming on 9 August 2024. The video had come out slightly ahead of it.
On the same day, 28 November 2024, the YouTuber Ecchan — who had produced STMLT — announced on her own account that she was stepping down. Her stated reason was that through that year information about the members and the group's activities had not been shared smoothly, to the point where she learned of a departure and of a new member's selection after the fact; she apologised for not having communicated enough with the management office. She added that she would watch the remaining members from a distance, and that although she had not yet met the new members she trusted the band and its team to have chosen well.
