Liner Notes

Tribe is the tenth album on which Queensrÿche, using hard guitar, complexly moving rhythm and Geoff Tate’s expressive singing, draws tension-filled metal. That the departed great guitarist Chris DeGarmo participated in part of its making also drew great attention among fans. The songs, while keeping an overall dark air, have melody that always functions as a sure outlet for emotion. From the powerful drive of the opener “Open” and the lyricism of “Losing Myself” to the drama of “Desert Dance,” the songs deftly cross modern hardness and a progressive sense, while cuts like “The Great Divide” and “Tribe” convey the band’s fullness. Though DeGarmo’s participation was limited, his presence gives the work a sure depth. Its appeal is creating the band’s own intelligent shading within a more modern, tightened weight, rather than tracing the former grand epic bent. Tension particular to this period, in which lineup changes and shifts of musicality continued, is reflected. Reflecting Queensrÿche’s constant change and inquiry, it is an exciting, engaging record.
