Liner Notes
Operation: Mindcrime II is an ambitious sequel on which Queensrÿche takes up the legendary 1988 story again and renders the characters’ subsequent conflict and tragic ending into dramatic metal. Weighty riffs, keyboard shading and Geoff Tate’s expressive singing move the songs like one grand stage work, not a mere sequel. It depicts the aftermath of the previous work’s protagonist, Nikki.
From the aggression of the opener “I’m American” and the drama of “One Foot in Hell” to cuts like “The Hands,” “Speed of Light” and “Re-Arrange You,” the songs keep their hooks while holding a taut, consistent story flow throughout. That Ronnie James Dio participated as a guest vocal also drew attention. Though a great challenge of facing a great past masterpiece head-on, it is a record that powerfully drew a new chapter with a mature band’s sure playing and rich voice. Its eagerness in taking on the high hurdle of a legendary sequel deserves special note. Letting you again savor Queensrÿche’s talent as a storyteller and its theatrical appeal, it is a dramatic, engaging work.
