LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
Gothic, the second album, came out on Peaceville Records on 19 March 1991 as VILE 26CD. It was recorded at Academy Music Studio from November 1990. Keith Appleton engineered it and arranged the orchestral parts, which are played by The Raptured Symphony Orchestra, Sarah Marrion sings as a guest, and Nick Holmes and Gregor Mackintosh designed the sleeve themselves. The line-up is the same five as on the debut.
The band's present-day biography says it was their early records, the aptly named Gothic above all, that quickly marked them out as the pioneers of gothic metal, weaving shadowy melody and atmosphere into the weight.
On 14 April 2016, to mark twenty-five years since its release, the band played the album in full at Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, the Netherlands. That set has been released as the live album Gothic - Live at Roadburn Festival, with the original "Desolate" used as the walk-on intro.
The Japanese edition followed on 1 November 1995 as PCCY-00799, adding a live "Gothic" recorded in Germany in November 1993 for eleven tracks. The track list here is the original ten; the player on this page carries twelve, adding "Rotting Misery (Doom Dub)" and "Breeding Fear (Demolition Dub)".
