Lost Paradise

Paradise Lost formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in 1988, and this is their debut album, released by Peaceville Records on 5 February 1990 as VILE 17CD. It was recorded in 1989 at Academy Music Studio, with Paul "Hammy" Halmshaw producing and Pat Grogan engineering, and the cover painting is by Duncan Fegredo. The line-up is Nick Holmes on vocals, Gregor Mackintosh on lead guitar, Aaron Aedy on rhythm guitar, Steve Edmondson on bass and Matthew Archer on drums. The biography the band published on their own site in 1999 recalls that the groups they shared stages with at the start were hardcore punk bands such as Extreme Noise Terror, and that while everyone around them played fast, Paradise Lost set out to play as slowly as they could. Their present-day biography describes those beginnings as a murky doom-death sound. The Japanese edition followed on 1 November 1995 as PCCY-00798, with a live "Eternal" recorded in Germany in November 1993 added for ten tracks. The track list here is the original nine; the player on this page carries a reissue with three more, "Eternal (Live)", "Gothic (Mix)" and "The Painless (Mix)".
