Liner Notes
Midnight Madness is the breakthrough that launched NIGHT RANGER to stardom, and one of the defining American melodic-hard-rock records of the 1980s. Keeping the drive of the twin guitars, the band raises the weight of keyboards and harmony vocals, pushing big MTV-era melodies and hooks to the front. The album was a major chart success and went multi-platinum, lifting the band to arena status. Playing and songcraft mesh ideally here, making this the band’s first true peak.
“Sister Christian,” sung by Kelly Keagy, opens from quiet piano into a towering chorus as the definitive power ballad of its era; loved across generations, its video was in heavy MTV rotation and became a song emblematic of American rock at the time. The Jack Blades–led “(You Can Still) Rock in America” is an anthem that turns rock exhilaration into pure form, and together with the melodic shine of “When You Close Your Eyes,” it presents both drive and lyricism in vivid balance. Uniting hardness and accessibility at a high level, this is the essential album that cemented the NIGHT RANGER name.
