Liner Notes
Dawn Patrol is the vivid debut on which NIGHT RANGER built their sound from twin guitars and wide-open choruses. Formed in the San Francisco Bay Area, the group had first performed as Ranger before adopting the NIGHT RANGER name, and this record marked their national debut. Centered on Jack Blades (bass and vocals), the dual lead attack of Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson trades off constantly, while Kelly Keagy’s drums and Alan Fitzgerald’s keyboards anchor everything. As you would expect from a guitarist who had just filled Randy Rhoads’ role in Ozzy Osbourne’s band, Gillis brings a sharpness that is obvious from this first record.
The aggressive riff and catchy chorus of the signature “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me,” along with the soaring melody of “Sing Me Away,” already make the band’s direction clear: hard-edged guitar work and arena-rock polish existing at once. The knack for landing between hard rock and pop melody, and the fast runs and harmonies traded by the two guitarists, are all present here as elements that would define the band. Rather than relying only on flashy solo exchanges, the writing keeps the pull of the song at its center, laying a firm blueprint for the huge success to come. Raw momentum and a refined feel for melodic material sit side by side, marking a striking starting point for the band’s career.
