LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
The title printed on the sleeve is the Greek ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ; the record is generally called by its subtitle instead. The Tapes of Wrath was the working title, and the one that stuck was taken from Aleister Crowley's The Book of Lies.
Recording ran from March 1991 to May 1992 in Chicago, Illinois and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, produced by Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker. After the success of The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste the label handed over a large budget, and Jourgensen has since said most of it went on drugs. When the first Lollapalooza reached Chicago in August 1991 he went backstage at a Butthole Surfers show and invited their singer Gibby Haynes to Chicago Trax!; the voice on "Jesus Built My Hotrod" was recorded there.
What is on the record is not industrial alone: speed metal, rockabilly and psychobilly all sit inside it, under lyrics about society, politics and religion. Rolling Stone placed it at number 80 in its Top 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time, and Q included it in its 50 Heaviest Albums of All Time in 2001. The running order here is the original's as printed.
