MINISTRY
Biography

Ministry are an industrial metal band that began in Chicago in 1981. Al Jourgensen is the man at the centre of it, and the band's own site calls him their visionary. They started in electro-pop, went all the way into industrial music, and then welded rock onto it and made a genre of their own. The seventeenth album, Hate To Go - Take Out Or Delivery, with a release date of 30 October 2026, closes forty-five years of it.

Where it starts: Special Affect and With Sympathy, late 1970s to 1983

Al Jourgensen's musical journey began with Special Affect, the punk band he was in during the late 1970s. Ministry itself dates from 1981, in Chicago.

Arista issued the debut album, With Sympathy, in 1983. The band's own biography calls this period polished electro-pop, and to an ear that knows the later records it hardly sounds like the same group. Announcing the end of the band, Jourgensen said he was amazed at the path it had taken, from With Sympathy to where they are today.

Into industrial: Twitch to Psalm 69, 1986 to 1992

On the second album, Twitch, in 1986, the band went all the way in. Their biography describes it as complete immersion into hammering industrial. They never went back to the starting point.

Of the third album, The Land Of Rape And Honey in 1988, the same page says it redefined the post-punk axis. The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste followed in 1989 and pushed further along that line.

Then, in 1992, Psalm 69 added the suffix -rock to industrial's relentless noise avalanche, created an entire new genre and, in the band's own words, fomented a nation of dedicated fans. It reached more listeners than anything else Ministry made.

The end of the Warner years, 1996 to 1999

Filth Pig in 1996 and Dark Side of the Spoon in 1999 both came out on Warner Bros. Looking back over his work, Jourgensen names three records as the exceptions to its political throughline: With Sympathy, Filth Pig and Dark Side of the Spoon.

Dark Side of the Spoon closed the band's relationship with the Sire and Warner group, which had begun with Twitch in 1986. Four years passed before the next album.

The Bush trilogy and after, 2003 to 2021

Animositisomina came out on Sanctuary in 2003. The three records that followed - Houses Of The Mole in 2004, Rio Grande Blood in 2006 and The Last Sucker in 2007 - are known officially as Ministry's Bush trilogy, made in years when American foreign and domestic policy went straight into the titles and the lyrics.

The guitarist Mike Scaccia played on Relapse in 2012 and From Beer to Eternity in 2013. He died on 22 December 2012, at forty-seven, after collapsing onstage at a show in Fort Worth, Texas.

AmeriKKKant in 2018 and Moral Hygiene in 2021 keep the same aim. "I've been saying the same thing for 30 years and nothing's ever changed," Jourgensen says - a man who as a boy was evacuated out of Cuba.

Box sets include Original Album Series (2011), Rhino's five-CD box of the Sire years.

The final album and the farewell, 2024 to 2027

After Hopiumforthemasses in 2024 comes the seventeenth album, Hate To Go - Take Out Or Delivery, on Cleopatra Records, with a release date of 30 October 2026. The band have said plainly that it is their last.

It took shape in 2025 in Jourgensen's home studio, with the engineers Justin Leeah and Michael Rozon alongside him, and with his longtime touring band: guitarists Monte Pittman and Cesar Soto, bassist Paul D'Amour, sampler and synth player John Bechdel and drummer Pepe Clarke Magaña. The return of his longtime associate Paul Barker was announced with it.

Jourgensen put it plainly: "There's not going to be a moment where I suddenly think, 'Wait! I got some ideas, I'm going to do another Ministry record.' I'm fucking done. I'm proud of what I've accomplished. It's been quite a ride, but I'm completely at peace with the fact that it's done. It's time to herd goats." The end of the farewell tour has been set for 2027. In October 2026 Jourgensen named the date and the place of the final show: the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on 30 October 2027, a year to the day after the album. Die Krupps of Germany join the farewell tour as special guests.
