Liner Notes
Rust in Peace is the fourth album on which Megadeth, around sharp-angled riffs and urgent rhythm, digs into thrash-metal aggression in an extremely many-sided way. The master Marty Friedman and the great drummer Nick Menza joined, completing one of the finest golden lineups in the band’s history. Organizing precisely meshing riffs, irregular rhythm and sharp singing to the limit, it pushes thrash technique and tension to one peak.
The dramatic development of the opener “Holy Wars... The Punishment Due,” the ferocious guitar battle of “Hangar 18,” themed on UFO conspiracy, and the famous solo of “Tornado of Souls” are landmarks of technical thrash, while cuts like “Lucretia” and “Five Magics” are full of complex, aggressive appeal. Its power lies in how the transcendent playing, rather than ending as a mere display of speed, fully unites with precise composition. The guitars of Mustaine and Friedman, contrasting yet meshing at a high level, are stunning. One complete form the thrash-metal genre reached, giving vast influence to later generations, it is an enduring masterpiece.
