The White Wolves Redefining Japanese Heavy Metal:
The Trajectory and Musical Evolution of LOVEBITES

1. The Context of the Girls' Metal Scene and the Uniqueness of LOVEBITES

Since the beginning of the 21st century, a unique trend known as the "Girls' Metal Band" scene has been forming within the Japanese music industry. In this fertile soil cultivated by pioneers such as Show-Ya and Aldious, LOVEBITES, formed in Tokyo in 2016, rapidly transcended existing frameworks. They became a unique entity, establishing a firm position within the context of global "Power Metal."

The uniqueness of LOVEBITES lies in the fact that, while donning brilliant white outfits reminiscent of Japanese idol culture and Visual Kei, they musically behave as the legitimate successors of 1980s New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and German Metal. By eliminating pop elements as much as possible and strictly adhering to fast double-bass drumming, twin lead guitar harmonies, and vocals sung entirely in English, LOVEBITES successfully elevated the gimmick of being a "Japanese all-female band" into acclaim for their pure musical talent.

2. The Eve of Formation and Early History: The Legacy of Destrose (2015-2016)

2.1 The Disbandment of Destrose and the Conception of a New Band

The origins of LOVEBITES lie in the disbandment of Destrose, a band often described as a "legend" within the Japanese girls' metal scene. Destrose was renowned for producing members of bands that would later lead the scene, such as Aldious and Mary's Blood, before ending its activities in 2015.

Miho, who served as the bassist and leader of the band, sought to form a new band after the disbandment to continue pursuing her ideal vision of heavy metal. She aimed for an orthodox heavy metal band boasting a powerful rhythm section and twin guitars, inspired by her deeply admired Iron Maiden. The first to resonate with this vision was drummer Haruna, who had previously played with her in Destrose. Haruna, who began drumming at the age of 13 and excelled in a double-bass drumming style influenced by Helloween's Uli Kusch, was an indispensable asset to support the robust bottom line that Miho envisioned.

2.2 Member Selection and the "White Outfit" Strategy

In 2016, Miho and Haruna set about selecting the remaining members. The choice for guitarist fell upon Midori, the former guitarist of Gekijo METALicche, who was known for her aggressive shredding. Furthermore, to serve as a melodious and fluid guitarist contrasting with Midori's rigid playing style, they reached out to Miyako, who was active at the time in a Drop Of Joker and 21g. Initially, Miyako joined as a support member, but her outstanding songwriting abilities and piano skills were deemed indispensable to the band's musical direction, leading to her being welcomed as an official member.

The final component to be decided was the vocalist. While many all-female bands adopted anime-like or idol-style singing voices, Miho and the others sought a more powerful and soulful voice. They selected Asami, who had absolutely no prior career in heavy metal and had been working as a backing vocalist for VAMPS and UVERworld. With a background in R&B and soul music, Asami's voice combined a rich mid-to-low range with a piercing high register, giving LOVEBITES' sound a unique sense of persuasion.

The band's name originates from Halestorm's song "Love Bites (So Do I)," which Asami sang during her audition. This name carries the meaning of coexisting feminine elegance and metal's aggressiveness through the words "Love" and "Bites." Additionally, they decided to unify their stage outfits in "white." This was a counterpoint to the "black" image conventional in the metal scene, serving as a visual strategy to assert their distinct presence from others.

On November 18, 2016, at the event "Women's Power presents Girls Band Next Generation" held at TSUTAYA O-WEST in Shibuya, Tokyo, LOVEBITES took the stage alongside Disqualia and Mai Yashima, making their official debut.

3. Awakening and Expansion into Europe: Awakening from Abyss (2017)

The year 2017 was when LOVEBITES transformed from a mere rookie band into a professional collective with its sights set on the global market. LOVEBITES signed a contract with Victor Entertainment, a major Japanese record company, and commenced full-scale recording activities.

3.1 The Lovebites EP and the Establishment of the Production System

On May 24 of that year, they released their debut EP, The Lovebites EP. Even at this point, LOVEBITES' production system reflected a clear intention to aim for global standards. They hired Mikko Karmila and Mika Jussila of Finnvox Studios—a prestigious Finnish studio renowned for works with Nightwish and Children of Bodom—as mixing and mastering engineers. Through this choice, LOVEBITES broke away from the soundscape typical of Japanese bands (which features dense mid-range frequencies) and acquired the clear, well-separated, and wide dynamic-range soundscape characteristic of European power metal.

3.2 The 1st Album and the First Overseas Performance

On October 25, 2017, they released their first full-length album, Awakening from Abyss. Songs such as "Shadowmaker" and "The Hammer of Wrath" fused dramatic twin-guitar progressions with Asami's powerful vocals, becoming the band's signature tracks and sending shockwaves through metal fans both at home and abroad.

Notably, at the end of 2017 immediately following their album debut, they had already performed their first overseas show in London. This vividly demonstrates that from the very beginning, LOVEBITES looked beyond Japan toward the UK and Europe, the true heartlands of metal. Through a partnership with JPU Records, a CD distribution network abroad was also established early on.

4. The Golden Award and the Festival Circuit (2018)

In 2018, the name of LOVEBITES would resound across the global metal scene.

4.1 Winning the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Award

On June 11 of the same year, at the prestigious British music awards Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards 2018 held at Indigo at The O2 in London, LOVEBITES won the "Best New Band" award. This was an unprecedented achievement for a Japanese all-female band, triumphing over prominent Western acts such as Sleep Token and Conjurer. This award marked the exact moment LOVEBITES was recognized not merely as part of "Japanese subculture," but as a genuine heavy metal act.

4.2 Appearances at Wacken Open Air and Bloodstock

Riding the momentum of the award, LOVEBITES went on to perform at major European metal festivals.

  • Wacken Open Air (Germany): They became the first Japanese all-female band to perform at one of the world's largest metal festivals.
  • Bloodstock Open Air (UK): On August 10, they performed on the Ronnie James Dio Stage. Although they were initially scheduled for a smaller stage, high anticipation led to their promotion to one of the main stages. Their performances of "Shadowmaker" and "Above The Black Sea" captivated the local crowd, and the live footage later released on YouTube garnered hundreds of thousands of views.

In December of the same year, they released their second album, Clockwork Immortality. While incorporating more symphonic elements than its predecessor, the album showcased their musical maturity, with high-speed tracks like "Rising" proudly singing of the band's solidarity.

5. Global Penetration and the Barrier of the Pandemic (2019-2020)

5.1 Touring with DragonForce and the Download Festival

In 2019, LOVEBITES further expanded the scale of their activities. They accompanied the British power metal band DragonForce on their UK tour as a support act. The fanbase of DragonForce, whose trademark is lightning-fast playing, shared great affinity with LOVEBITES, and this tour contributed significantly to opening up a new fan base.

Additionally, in June of the same year, they performed at the Download Festival in the UK and the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium. At the Download Festival, a symbolic event occurred when Asami made a surprise appearance during Halestorm's set to passionately sing "Love Bites (So Do I)"—the song that inspired the band's name—alongside Lzzy Hale.

5.2 Electric Pentagram and the Oricon Top 10

In January 2020, they released their third album, Electric Pentagram. The title signifies the pentagram formed by the unity of the five members, making it the heaviest and most aggressive work in the band's history. The thrash-metal-style riffs of "Thunder Vengeance" and the anthemic nature of "Golden Destination" were highly praised, leading the album to peak at No. 9 on the Oricon Weekly Chart, their highest position at the time.

5.3 Activities Under the Pandemic

However, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, scheduled tours were inevitably canceled or postponed. In response, the band released the live video work Five of a Kind - Live in Tokyo 2020 in July, which captured their performance at Zepp DiverCity on February 21, 2020. Furthermore, in December of the same year, they released Awake Again - Live from Abyss, a studio live performance conducted without an audience, maintaining their connection with fans through video releases.

In March 2021, they released the mini-album Glory, Glory, to the World. The track "Winds of Transylvania" was selected as the opening theme song for the anime Vlad Love, directed by Mamoru Oshii, allowing the band to reach out to the anime fanbase as well.

6. The Departure of Founder Miho and the Hiatus (2021)

On August 17, 2021, while the band seemed to be sailing smoothly, shocking news reverberated across the globe. Bassist Miho, the founder, leader, and core of the band's sound, announced her departure.

In her statement, Miho expressed that "leaving LOVEBITES was a painful decision," but articulated her desire to "change her environment and re-evaluate herself as a musician." Her departure was a serious situation that threatened the very survival of the band, as she had anchored its framework with a powerful finger-picked gallop beat inspired by her deep admiration for Iron Maiden's Steve Harris. Consequently, the band declared a temporary hiatus.

In December of the same year, the remaining members released the best-of album In The Beginning - The Best of 2017-2021 to mark the "conclusion of Chapter 1." This release included "Nameless Warrior," the final unreleased track recorded while Miho was still in the band. With lyrics penned by Asami, the song spoke of overcoming the pain of parting and the determination to keep fighting as a nameless warrior, demonstrating the band's unyielding spirit.

7. Revival and the New System: The Incarnation (2022-2023)

7.1 Bassist Audition and the Joining of Fami

Breaking a silence of about a year, the band launched an open audition for a new bassist, titled "The Incarnation," in the spring of 2022. Selected from applicants around the world was a young 20-year-old bassist, Fami.

Prior to joining, Fami was active on her own YouTube channel and was an influencer boasting over 650,000 subscribers. Her playing style was modern and technical, frequently utilizing slap techniques and tapping, which stood in stark contrast to Miho's orthodox style. However, the members highly praised her young talent, experience, and above all, her passion for heavy metal, announcing her official addition to the band in October 2022.

7.2 Complete Comeback with Judgement Day

The newly re-formed LOVEBITES released their fourth album, Judgement Day, on February 22, 2023. The sound heard on the title track and "Stand And Deliver (Shoot 'em Down)" was a robust and modern evolution, augmenting their traditional power metal with a sense of groove driven by Fami's bass. The album achieved a major success, dispelling fans' anxieties by peaking at No. 5 on both the Oricon Weekly Album Chart and Billboard Japan Hot Albums, marking the highest position in the band's history.

In March 2023, they held their comeback live show "We Are The Resurrection" at EX Theater Roppongi in Tokyo. Tickets sold out instantly, and the performance was later released as the live video work Knockin' at Heaven's Gate.

8. World Tour and the Road to Budokan (2024-Present)

8.1 The Thin Line Between Love and Hate World Tour

In 2024, LOVEBITES embarked on their largest-ever world tour, "The Thin Line Between Love and Hate World Tour." This tour spanned not only Japan but also Europe, the United States, and Asia.

  • Europe: From June to July, they performed at massive festivals including Hellfest (France), Resurrection Fest (Spain), and Rock Imperium Festival (Spain). At Hellfest on June 28, they took the stage on one of the main stages, delivering a commanding performance before a crowd of tens of thousands.
  • USA: In September, after performing at ProgPower USA held in Atlanta, they conducted a headline tour titled "Eternal Phenomenon Tour US," visiting cities such as Dallas and Los Angeles.
  • Japan: On September 1, they held a concert titled "Memorial for the Warrior Souls" at the Tokyo Garden Theater. This performance is featured in the live video work No More Tragedy, released on March 5, 2025.

8.2 Budokan Performance Decided

Furthermore, as their next major milestone, the band announced that they would hold a solo concert, "LIVE AT BUDOKAN," at the Nippon Budokan on March 29, 2026. Reaching the Budokan, considered sacred ground for Japanese rock bands, signifies that LOVEBITES has established its status as Japan's top metal band in both name and reality.

8.3 The OUTSTANDING TOUR 2026 and Fami's Solo EP

On August 26, 2026, bassist Fami released the solo EP Hakoniwa (箱庭) on Victor Entertainment. It is her first solo release in roughly five years, since the crowdfunded Graduation Album she made as a high-school student in 2021, and the first since she joined LOVEBITES. Fami takes both bass and lead vocals; she wrote words and music for three songs, including the title track "Hakoniwa Affordance," and composed a bass instrumental, while the Vocaloid producer NayutalieN wrote "Slap Alien" for the record. All six tracks were recorded with a live band.

Following the fifth album Outstanding Power, the band opened the nationwide tour "LOVEBITES - OUTSTANDING TOUR - JAPAN 2026" at Zepp Fukuoka on August 29, 2026, and played ten dates through Hiroshima, Nagoya, Osaka, Sapporo, Sendai, Kanazawa and Niigata, ending with two nights at Zepp Haneda (TOKYO) on September 25 and 26. The South-East Asian leg, "LOVEBITES - OUTSTANDING TOUR - SEA 2026," followed with three shows: the Esplanade Annexe Studio in Singapore on October 2, Bantadthong Art Space in Bangkok on October 3 and Zepp Kuala Lumpur on October 4. Also announced was an appearance on day one of FULL METAL JAPAN 2026 - POWERED BY WACKEN at Pia Arena MM on October 24, on the same bill as Michael Schenker Group, Stratovarius and Vandenberg.

10. Conclusion

While using the stylistic uniqueness of Japanese "Girls' Metal" as an entryway, LOVEBITES is a rare band that successfully stripped away that label through thorough meritocracy and respect for orthodox heavy metal.

Born from the disbandment of Destrose, the band faced a critical crisis losing a powerful leader in Miho, yet evolved into a stronger and more modern "Chapter 2" by welcoming the new talent of Fami. Their trajectory—winning the Golden Gods in London, passionate performances at holy grounds like Wacken and Download, and the announcement of a Nippon Budokan solo concert for 2026—proves that LOVEBITES is not just a passing fad, but recognized as a permanent player in the global metal scene.

The five wolves adorned in white outfits continue to sprint toward their "Golden Destination" to rule the world through the common language of heavy metal, transcending the walls of language and borders.
