The Finnish Giant Transcending Genre Boundaries

In the early 2000s, Nordic Finland was establishing a unique and dominant position in the global heavy metal scene. It was an era when melodic speed metal spearheaded by Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica, or the symphonic metal movement pioneered by Nightwish, enthralled metal fans around the world. However, right in the midst of that glittering scene, a band was born that resisted existing categorizations and advocated "pure heavy rock, neither power metal nor AOR." That band was LEVERAGE.

The greatest characteristic of LEVERAGE's music lies in its fusion of the traditional hard rock framework of 70s bands like Rainbow and Deep Purple with modern production, Nordic melancholy, and cinematic grandeur.

Chapter 1: The Awakening and Glory of MK1 (2002–2012)

1.1 The Eve of Formation: A Shared Vision Between Two Friends

The story of LEVERAGE began around 2002, stemming from the long-standing friendship and collaboration between two musicians active in the Jyväskylä region of Finland: Tuomas Heikkinen and Torsti Spoof.

At the time, Tuomas was blossoming not only as a guitarist but also as a songwriter, already harboring ideas for several songs. Meanwhile, Torsti, in addition to his activities as a guitarist, was building a career as a studio engineer and producer, possessing technical expertise in acoustics. Their common goal was to revive the spirit of the 80s metal and hard rock they admired with modern sound quality, without pandering to the trending power metal (characterized by driving drums and a barrage of high-pitched vocals). It was an ambitious project to create a "timeless" rock album.

1.2 In Search of the "Voice": The Joining of Pekka Heino

As the project took concrete shape, the most crucial challenge became selecting a frontman (vocalist). Interestingly, during the initial concept stage, the person Tuomas had set his sights on was Kimmo Blom, who would later become the singer for MK2. However, Kimmo was extremely busy with other projects and activities at the time, forcing him to decline due to scheduling conflicts.

A fateful turning point arrived when Tuomas, while performing at a party, by chance encountered Pekka Heino, who happened to be at the same venue. At the time, Pekka was active in the AOR band Brother Firetribe and had a career with the rock band Cashmir. His clear, soaring high-baritone voice was highly acclaimed within Finland.

Tuomas and Pekka hit it off, and after listening to LEVERAGE's demo tracks, Pekka immediately decided to join the project. His addition defined the "strength of melody" in LEVERAGE's sound. Pekka's vocals lent power and emotional depth to the lyrical and melodic compositions penned by Tuomas.

During this period, the rhythm section and keyboard members also solidified. With Pekka Lampinen on bass, Valtteri Revonkorpi on drums, and Marko Niskala on keyboards joining the ranks, the band's lineup was established as a six-piece ensemble.

1.3 The Impactful Debut Album "Tides" and International Acclaim (2006)

In 2006, the debut album "Tides" was released. The album was launched domestically in Finland via Elements Music and in Japan through Avalon/Marquee.

"Tides" overwhelmed listeners right from the opening track, "Fifteen Years." Starting with a grand introduction and developing into a catchy, anthemic chorus, this song became the band's signature track. Music media and critics praised it highly, calling it "a level of maturity rare for newcomers" and filled with "non-fillers," reaching not only the fanbase of Brother Firetribe but also more traditional heavy metal audiences.

Of particular note is the handling of bonus tracks on the Japanese edition. The Japanese release of "Tides" included two additional tracks: "Waterfall" and "Land of Flames." "Waterfall," in particular, gained cult popularity among fans as a fast-paced track whose quality matched or even surpassed the songs on the main album. This serves as an excellent example of how crucial "Japanese bonus tracks" were in influencing purchasing decisions in the Japanese western music market at the time, and how the band strove to provide high-quality tracks for their Japanese fans.

1.4 "Blind Fire" and the Expansion into Frontiers (2008)

Following the success of their debut, the band secured a contract with the prestigious Italian melodic rock label Frontiers Records. This expanded LEVERAGE's sphere of activity across the whole of Europe.

The second album, "Blind Fire," released in 2008, clearly demonstrated the band's evolution. While maintaining the melodic aspects of the previous work, it incorporated heavier, darker, and more progressive elements. A noteworthy point in the production of this album is the information that legendary producer Michael Wagener was involved in the mixing, etc. (mentioned in some interviews). With the expertise of someone who had worked with Dokken and Skid Row, the band's sound was elevated to a more dimensional and international standard.

The Japanese edition (Avalon/Marquee) from this period featured two bonus tracks: "Yesterdays" and "Rockethead." Rather than being mere outtakes left over from the main album, these tracks—which Torsti Spoof was involved in composing—were omitted due to the album's structure but possessed incredibly strong hooks on their own. The members themselves have noted that "Rockethead" is characterized by lyrics themed around an "Urban Legend."

1.5 "Circus Colossus" and the Lean Toward Symphonic Metal (2009)

In 2009, the band transferred to the major Finnish metal label Spinefarm Records and released their third album, "Circus Colossus."

With this album, LEVERAGE boldly stepped into the realm of "symphonic metal." As the title suggests, the entire album carried a dramatic flair reminiscent of a giant circus or a film, and Marko Niskala's keyboard work took on a thickness akin to orchestration. In tracks like "Wolf and the Moon" and "Movie Gods," grand string arrangements fused with heavy guitar riffs, completing a soundscape that could be called the culmination of the MK1 era.

However, during this period, bassist Pekka Lampinen departed, and Sami Norrbacka joined as his successor. Sami had already been serving as a touring support member for the band, ensuring a smooth transition.

1.6 The Long Silence: The End of MK1 and Hiatus

After the release of "Circus Colossus," the band appeared to be steadily building their career, but upon entering the 2010s, their activities ground to a sudden halt. There were multiple, complex factors behind this:

1. Members' Health Issues: Although specific details were kept private, it has been suggested that there was a period when continuing activities was difficult due to health reasons.
2. Changes in the Business Environment: Due to staff restructuring and policy shifts within Spinefarm Records, the support system for the band changed, leading to the termination of their contract.
3. Loss of Motivation and Diverging Directions:** Leader Tuomas recalled the situation at the time, stating that they had "lost focus." The lack of opportunities for international touring was also a factor in the decline of motivation.

During this period, Torsti Spoof, one of the founding members, became passionate about a new career in composing film scores and trailer music, effectively departing from the band. As a result, the MK1 era led by the "two friends," Tuomas and Torsti, quietly came to an end, and LEVERAGE entered a hiatus that would last nearly a decade.

Chapter 2: The Rebirth of MK2 and an Unexpected Tragedy (2018–2022)

2.1 The Signal of Resurrection: A New Lineup

Breaking the long silence, it was in 2018 that Tuomas Heikkinen began moving LEVERAGE once again. In reconstructing the band, he reached out to his former comrades, but vocalist Pekka Heino was focusing on his own band (Brother Firetribe), making a return impossible. Torsti was also dedicated to his own production work.

Thus, Tuomas recruited Kimmo Blom, who had been a vocal candidate when the band was first formed. Kimmo was a talented singer known for his work with Urban Tale and Finland's famous Christmas metal project Raskasta Joulua. His voice possessed a huskier and more emotional "rock singer" resonance compared to Pekka's clear tone.

Furthermore, Mikko Salovaara, formerly of Kiuas, joined on guitar. Mikko was a guitarist known for his technical playing, and his addition brought a fresh, aggressive element to the band.

2.2 "Determinus": Return to Roots and Evolution (2019)

The first full-length album under the new lineup (MK2), "Determinus," was released in 2019 by Frontiers Music Srl. The album title can be interpreted as a coined word combining "Determine" and "Us," reflecting the band's unyielding determination.

Musically, it dialed back the symphonic embellishments of the MK1 era, returning to a more straightforward and organic "hard rock" sound. Tracks like "Burn Love Burn" and "Wind of Morrigan" pay homage to 70s and 80s masters like Rainbow and Whitesnake while being armed with modern heaviness. "Wind of Morrigan" in particular incorporated Celtic melodies and featured a guest appearance by violinist Lotta-Maria Heiskanen, who would later become an official member.

The Japanese edition (Avalon/Marquee) featured "Wind of Morrigan (Acoustic Version)" as a bonus track (while some sources treat "Troy" as a bonus track, it is often included in the standard edition).

2.3 "Above the Beyond" and the Battle with Illness (2021)

In 2021, the band released their fifth album, "Above the Beyond." This work was a fulfilling release demonstrating that the MK2 lineup had matured and the band's solidarity had reached its peak. In tracks like "Emperor" and "Starlight," melodic hooks and sharp riffs coexist in perfect balance.

However, behind the production of this album lay a harsh reality. Vocalist Kimmo Blom was already battling a serious illness (cancer) during this period. Despite being stricken by the disease, he approached the recording sessions with phenomenal mental strength, etching his vocals into the tracks. Themes such as human frailty, hope, and the journey toward the "Beyond" peeking through the lyrics here and there might reflect his state of mind at the time.

2.4 Farewell: The Passing of Kimmo Blom (2022)

In August 2022, deep sorrow struck the band and fans alike. Kimmo Blom passed away. It was a premature death at the age of 52. His passing was a major loss for the entire Finnish music scene and a devastating blow to LEVERAGE, losing the frontman who symbolized their relaunch. Many fans feared the band would enter another long silence or disband completely.

Chapter 3: MK3, a New Dawn, and "Gravity" (2023–Present)

3.1 The Successor: The Emergence of Paolo Ribaldini

Following Kimmo's death, the band decided to stand up once again after a few months of hiatus. For Tuomas Heikkinen, LEVERAGE was life itself, and stopping the music was not an option if he was to carry on Kimmo's legacy.

The person chosen as the new vocalist was Paolo Ribaldini, an Italian-born singer residing in Finland. In addition to his work with Seraphiel and Skiltron, Paolo was known for his appearance on the popular Finnish TV show "The Voice of Finland." Notably, Paolo himself had been a long-time fan of LEVERAGE. When he was invited to sing at a memorial event for Kimmo Blom, his performance and deep respect for the band struck a chord with the members, leading to his official enrollment.

3.2 Lineup Transformation: Violin and a New Drummer

With the transition to MK3, changes occurred in the lineup. MK2 guitarist Mikko Salovaara departed due to scheduling conflicts. Rather than searching for a replacement guitarist, the band made the bold decision to welcome violinist Lotta-Maria Heiskanen, who had previously participated as a guest, as an official member.

As a result, LEVERAGE acquired a unique instrumentation of "one guitar + keyboards + violin." Unlike a folk metal approach, this was an evolution to express the classical melodic beauty held by bands like Deep Purple and Rainbow more directly through a live instrument like the violin.

Additionally, Elias Ojutkangas joined as the new drummer, succeeding Valtteri Revonkorpi, who had supported the drums for many years. Elias is a talented musician with performance experience in bands such as King of Sweden Bronze, Silver & Brass.

3.3 The Full Picture of the Latest Album "Gravity" (2025)

On June 20, 2025, the first album by the reborn LEVERAGE (MK3), titled "Gravity," was released by Frontiers Music Srl.

This album has become the most ambitious work in the band's history, fully featuring Paolo's wide-ranging, expressive vocals and Lotta's violin. The title track, "Gravity," is a lengthy, dramatic piece symbolizing the band's new direction.
