Time Machine

The fifth album is a double record, released by Relativity in October 1993 and reissued by Epic in 1998. Disc one collects new songs, outtakes and unreleased studio recordings; disc two is live material from 1988 and 1992. The Japanese edition came out on 11 November as SRCS 6857-8. Five tracks on the first disc date from the sessions for The Extremist in 1992: Crazy, Banana Mango II, Thinking of You, Speed of Light and Baroque. Speed of Light went on to the soundtrack of the 1993 film Super Mario Bros. Four more come from the self-titled EP of 1984; a fifth EP track, Talk to Me, was left off because its master tape had been damaged. Disc two draws on three shows from the Extremist tour - Upper Darby on 3 December 1992, Boston on 23 December 1992 and London on 5 February 1993 - and one from the Surfing With the Alien tour, San Diego on 11 June 1988. The album reached number 95 on the Billboard 200, stayed eight weeks and was certified Gold on 27 October 1994. All Alone reached number 21 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart and was nominated at the 1995 Grammy Awards; Speed of Light had been nominated the year before, making them his fifth and sixth nominations. Note that the streaming edition carries only the studio half, so the player beside this page plays fourteen tracks rather than the twenty-eight listed here. The 1998 reissue carries detailed liner notes explaining the story behind both discs.
