Clayman

LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
Clayman is a representative early masterpiece on which In Flames unites melodic death metal’s sharp aggression and memorable catchiness at an extremely high level. Sharply chopping riffs and beautiful lead melody intertwine closely, and Anders Fridén’s fierce screams powerfully push the songs forward. While evoking a machine-like sure playing precision, its choruses have a sure, strongly memorable melody. A culminating record of the early era. From the powerful drive of the opener “Bullet Ride” and the drama of “Pinball Map” to the catchy “Only for the Weak,” which became the band’s greatest classic, every song is engaging, while the title track “Clayman” and a cut like “Satellites and Astronauts” convey the work’s fullness. In particular, “Only for the Weak” became an enduring anthem symbolizing the band. An extremely important record for the way it splendidly arranged its extreme, cutting-edge musicality into a refined form reaching a wider range of listeners. It left immense influence on later scenes such as metalcore. A powerful, engaging masterpiece that is the complete form of the early Gothenburg sound and also a sure bridge to the next, modern era — a record concentrating the band’s appeal.
