Liner Notes
IV is the fourth album, on which Godsmack concentrates firm riffs and dark melody. Sully Erna produced it himself, with Andy Johns — known for engineering Led Zeppelin's IV — taking part in the engineering. The title means the Roman numeral four, and a classic hard-rock depth is added to the band's sound. Keeping the weight, it steps toward a wider range of expression.
"Speak" became a signature song with its aggressive riff, and "Shine Down" delivers with a heavy beat recalling "When the Levee Breaks" and a big melody. On "The Enemy" and "No Rest for the Wicked," firm grooves stand out. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, the band's second consecutive chart-topper. An accomplished record that widened the sound while keeping the trademark weight.
