Archetype came out in April 2004 on Liquid 8. Sources disagree on the day — some give 19 April and others the 20th — and Victor issued the Japanese edition on 21 April as VICP-62664. It was recorded in December 2003 at Rumbo Studios in California and produced by the band with Rhys Fulber.
The band had broken up in 2002 and started again the following year without Dino Cazares. Christian Olde Wolbers moved from bass to guitar and Byron Stroud came in on bass, with Burton C. Bell singing and Raymond Herrera on drums.
It reached number thirty on the American Billboard 200, the band's highest placing up to that point, and number two on the independent chart. There were three singles: "Cyberwaste" on 22 March, the title track on 19 April and "Bite the Hand That Bleeds" on 7 December.
The thirteenth song, "School", is a Nirvana cover written by Kurt Cobain. Thirteen songs in all; the Japanese edition adds a remix of the title track for fourteen. The running order here is that of the North American Liquid 8 pressing, LIQ 12189.
