This is the sixth album by the band from San Diego. Metal Blade Records released it on 7 August 2015 and it became their first record to chart on the Billboard 200, entering at number 100 and at 44 on Top Albums.
The subject is stated plainly. Where Monolith of Inhumanity dealt with the future of the Earth if humanity carried on as it was, this record deals with the results of what humanity has already done to the environment -- the Great Pacific Garbage Patch among them. The title names it in a phrase: the extinction event of the Anthropocene.
It was very well received, scoring 86 on Metacritic from four reviews. Travis Ryan's singing drew the most praise. Exclaim! noted that between the gurgling growls and the shrill shrieks he uses the snarl he had experimented with on the previous album, a sort of pseudo-singing more unsettling than an ordinary death metal scream, and admired the range that gives him. About.com wrote that this band writes albums, pointing at an interlude like "The Burden of Seven Billion" as a rest placed deliberately after a draining first half. The order here is the standard twelve tracks; the Japanese edition carries thirteen.
