Liner Notes
The Metal Opera is a rock-opera work on which, centered on Tobias Sammet, many guest vocalists take part and advance the story by handing off the singing. To power-metal drive, a drama like a stage work is added. It is the memorable first work of a project that Sammet, the frontman of Edguy, created by pouring in his ambition.
On “Reach out for the Light,” “Serpents in Paradise” and “Avantasia,” while the guests’ personalities are strong, the melody of the songs themselves functions as the skeleton. Star singers such as Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween) and André Matos (Angra) line up. Songs like “Breaking Away” and “Farewell” breathe an early, fresh appeal too. While aiming for grandeur, they do not forget catchy hooks. It is a monumental opening chapter that vividly showed the appeal of the metal-opera form.
