Steven Tyler does not rely only on high screams; he moves among bluesy grit, talk-sung phrasing and a dangerous sheen, taking control of the band’s center. “Make It” and “Mama Kin” carry the forward heat of a crowded bar, while “One Way Street” leaves room for a longer expression of the group’s love of the blues. “Dream On” grows from restrained piano tension into a large-scale ballad and proves that the band could reach beyond a raw hard-rock template.
