Unleash the Fury

『Unleash the Fury』は、イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンが流れるような速弾き、クラシカルな和声、力強いリフを重ねたネオクラシカル・メタル作だ。技巧の密度は非常に高いが、曲にはブルース由来の勢いとロックンロールの直進力が残り、ただ速いだけの作品には終わっていない。 “Locked & Loaded”の攻撃性、“Revolution”の勢い、“Crown of Thorns”の劇性、そして表題曲“Unleash the Fury”のスケール感まで、収録曲は幅広い表情を見せる。“Fuguetta”のようなクラシカルな小品や“Magic and Mayhem”の華やかさが、長い収録内容に変化を与えている。 ギターが主役でありながら、メロディの劇性とリズムの押し出しが作品を前へと進めていく。二枚組に迫るほどのボリュームの中でも、イングヴェイの不変の個性が濃密に貫かれている点が印象的だ。“The Hunt”“Exile”のような曲でも、鋭いリフと劇的なメロディが結び付き、アルバムに一貫した推進力を与えている。膨大な収録曲の一つひとつに、イングヴェイらしい個性がしっかりと刻まれている点も見逃せない。速さと様式美、そしてロックンロールの勢いを一枚に凝縮した、聴き応えのあるギター・メタル作品と言える。

Unleash the Fury is a neoclassical-metal record on which Yngwie Malmsteen layers flowing speed playing, classical harmony and powerful riffs. The density of technique is very high, yet a blues-derived drive and rock-and-roll momentum remain in the songs, so it never ends as merely fast. From the aggression of “Locked & Loaded” and the drive of “Revolution” to the drama of “Crown of Thorns” and the scale of the title track “Unleash the Fury,” the songs show wide-ranging faces, while a classical miniature like “Fuguetta” and the flair of “Magic and Mayhem” give variety to a long program. The guitar is the lead, yet the drama of the melody and the push of the rhythm carry the music forward. Even within a volume approaching a double album, Yngwie’s unchanging character runs densely throughout, which is striking. Concentrating speed, beauty of form and rock-and-roll drive in one record, it is an engaging guitar-metal work.
