W.E.T.

『W.E.T.』は、メロディック・ロックの経験豊かなミュージシャンたちが集まり、曲の強さを最優先した2009年11月発表のデビュー作だ。発端はフロンティアーズの代表セラフィーノ・ペルジーノで、ジャーニーを離れたジェフ・スコット・ソートに、ジャーニーの系譜にある純度の高いメロディック・ロックを歌わせたいと考えた。2008年、レーベルはワーク・オブ・アートのロバート・セールとエクリプスのエリック・モーテンソンに、6曲ずつ持ち寄るよう依頼している。当初の名は「Lost in the Shadows」だったが、誰も気に入らなかったという。 代わりに採られたW・E・Tは、三人の出自であるWork of Art、Eclipse、Talismanの頭文字である。曲の大半はモーテンソンとセールが書き、詞はソートが担当した。分厚いコーラス、磨かれたギター、感情を押し上げるヴォーカルが、どの曲にも大きな開放感を与えている。完成度の高い楽曲が並びながら、職人的な冷たさはない。“One Love”などのビデオでベースを弾いたのは、ソートのTALISMANでの盟友マルセル・ヤコブだった。撮影の約一か月後、彼はこの世を去っている。作品には追悼の献辞が添えられた。爽快さと哀愁が同居する、現代メロディック・ロックの基準点の一つといえる一枚だ。

W.E.T., released in November 2009, is the debut on which experienced melodic rock musicians gathered and put the strength of the songs first. It began with Frontiers boss Serafino Perugino, who wanted Jeff Scott Soto — freshly out of Journey — to sing high-purity melodic rock in that lineage. In 2008 the label asked Robert Säll of Work of Art and Erik Mårtensson of Eclipse to bring six songs each. The original name was “Lost in the Shadows”; nobody liked it. The name they took instead, W-E-T, is the initials of the three men's own bands: Work of Art, Eclipse, Talisman. Mårtensson and Säll wrote most of the music and Soto the lyrics. Thick choruses, polished guitar and a voice that lifts the emotion give every song a wide sense of release. The writing is highly finished, yet never craftsman-cold. The bass in the videos, including “One Love,” was played by Marcel Jacob, Soto's comrade from Talisman — and about a month after the shoot he was gone. The release carries a dedication to him. Exhilaration and melancholy together: one of the reference points of modern melodic rock.
