Earthrage

『Earthrage』は、ジェフ・スコット・ソート、エリック・モーテンソン、ロバート・セールという3人の個性を、さらに重く、より洗練されたメロディック・ハード・ロックへ結び付けた2018年3月23日発表の第3作だ。ソートの声は熱く、モーテンソンのギターとセールの鍵盤／作曲は、曲に大きなフックを与える。エクリプスのマグヌス・ヘンリクソンとロバン・ベックも変わらず脇を固めている。 “Watch the Fire”“Urgent”“Kings on Thunder Road”などは、硬いリフと澄んだコーラスが鮮やかに噛み合う。単なるスーパー・グループ的な派手さではなく、楽曲そのものの完成度が高い。本作は三人がそれぞれ絶好調の時期に重なった。モーテンソンはエクリプスの成功作を出してアミュニションを控え、ソートは自身のソロ作とサンズ・オブ・アポロのデビューを経たばかり、セールはFMのスティーヴ・オーヴァーランドとの作品を仕上げ、ワーク・オブ・アートの第4作に取りかかろうとしていた。レーベル代表がフロンティアーズ史上屈指の一枚と呼んだのも、まったくの誇張ではない。80年代AORの精神を持ちつつ、現代的な音圧で鳴る一枚だ。

Earthrage, released on 23 March 2018, is the third album, tying the three personalities of Jeff Scott Soto, Erik Mårtensson and Robert Säll into heavier, more polished melodic hard rock. Soto's voice runs hot, while Mårtensson's guitar and Säll's keys and writing give the songs big hooks. Eclipse's Magnus Henriksson and Robban Bäck are alongside them as before. “Watch the Fire,” “Urgent” and “Kings on Thunder Road” lock hard riffs and clear choruses together vividly. This is not supergroup flash: the songs themselves are finished to a high standard. The album also landed at a creative peak for all three — Mårtensson coming off a successful Eclipse record with Ammunition ahead, Soto fresh from his own solo album and the debut of Sons of Apollo, and Säll having just completed a record with Steve Overland of FM and about to start Work of Art's fourth. The label boss calling it one of the finest records in Frontiers' history was not pure hyperbole. A record with the spirit of 1980s AOR and the pressure of a modern mix.
