We Are One

『We Are One』は、U.D.O.がドイツ連邦軍軍楽隊と組み、ヘヴィ・メタルのリフと本格的な吹奏楽アレンジを、正面から融合させた異色作だ。ウド・ダークシュナイダーのざらついた声は、金管とパーカッションの大きな音像の中でも埋もれず、曲に独特の緊張感を与えている。 単なるオーケストラ版ではなく、行進曲的なリズム、合唱、メタルの推進力を、まったく新しい楽曲として組み立てている点が本作の特徴だ。冒頭“Pandemonium”のスケール感、表題曲“We Are One”の高揚、“Children of the World”の壮大さ、そして“Mother Earth”“Rebel Town”のドラマ性まで、収録曲は吹奏楽とメタルの融合を多彩な形で示している。 平和、環境、連帯といった大きな題材を掲げ、スケールの大きい音楽でメッセージを伝えようとした意欲が、全編にみなぎっている。長年のバンドが、まったく新しい表現へと大胆に踏み込んだ点に、本作の大きな意義がある。“Blackout”“Neon Diamond”のような曲でも、メタルのリフと吹奏楽の壮大な響きが融合し、独特のスケール感を生み出している。従来のU.D.O.作品とは一線を画す、特別な位置を占める作品だ。メタルの枠を軽々と越えてみせた、野心的で聴き応えのある一枚と言える。

We Are One is an unusual work on which U.D.O. teams with the German Federal Armed Forces military band, fusing heavy-metal riffs and genuine wind-ensemble arrangements head-on. Udo Dirkschneider’s gritty voice is not buried within the large sonic picture of brass and percussion, giving the songs a distinctive tension. Its distinction is that, rather than a mere orchestral version, it builds marching-like rhythm, choirs and metal drive into entirely new songs. From the scale of the opener “Pandemonium” and the lift of the title track “We Are One” to the grandeur of “Children of the World” and the drama of “Mother Earth” and “Rebel Town,” the songs show the fusion of wind ensemble and metal in varied forms. Raising large themes of peace, the environment and solidarity, an ambition to convey a message through large-scale music fills the whole. Its great significance is that a long-running band boldly stepped into entirely new expression. Leaping lightly beyond the frame of metal, it is an ambitious, engaging record.
