『Dreamtime』は、THE CULTがポストパンクの緊張感、ゴシック・ロックの陰影、サイケデリックな浮遊感を一つにまとめたデビュー作だ。イアン・アストベリーの呪術的な歌と、ビリー・ダフィーのきらめくギターが、曲ごとに独特の夜気を生み出している。サザン・デス・カルト、デス・カルトという前身バンドを経て、彼らはこの一枚で新たな出発を果たした。 “Spiritwalker”“Go West”“Horse Nation”といった楽曲には、後により大きなロックンロールへと展開する前の、鋭く神秘的な魅力がある。“83rd Dream”“Dreamtime”のような楽曲にも、バンドの独特な世界観が息づいている。“Butterflies”“A Flower in the Desert”“Bad Medicine Waltz”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい陰りが息づいている。イアン・アストベリーの神秘的な世界観とビリー・ダフィーの独特なギター・サウンドというバンドの核となる要素はすでにここに揃っており、後の飛躍を予感させる個性的なデビュー作だ。ネイティヴ・アメリカンの精神性やスピリチュアルなイメージへの傾倒も、早くも顔をのぞかせている。80年代英国の地下感覚を、個性的な歌とギターで形にした本作は、バンドの原点を示す一枚である。

Dreamtime is the debut on which THE CULT brought together post-punk tension, gothic-rock shadow and psychedelic floating. Ian Astbury’s incantatory singing and Billy Duffy’s glittering guitar generate a distinctive night air in each song. After the predecessor bands Southern Death Cult and Death Cult, they made a new departure on this record. Songs like “Spiritwalker,” “Go West” and “Horse Nation” have a sharp, mystical appeal from before they developed into bigger rock ’n’ roll. Songs like “83rd Dream” and “Dreamtime” breathe the band’s distinctive worldview too. A leaning toward Native American spirituality and spiritual imagery already shows its face. Shaping the 1980s British underground sensibility with distinctive singing and guitar, it is a record that shows the band’s origin.
