『Miasma』は、デビュー作の路線を受け継ぎつつ、THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDERがメロディック・デスの殺傷力を一段と高めた第2作だ。鋭いギター・ハーモニーと猛烈なリズムを軸に、鋭さと疾走感に満ちた楽曲を凝縮している。本作はドラムのザック・ギブソンが参加した唯一のアルバムであり、ベースのデイヴ・ロックにとっては最後の作品でもある。約34分という引き締まった構成の中に、無駄のない攻撃性を詰め込んだ、密度の高い一枚だ。全米ビルボード200では118位に達し、初期の代表作の一つに数えられている。ジャケットにはラスヴェガスのダウンタウンを写した写真が用いられている点も、初期作ならではの趣だ。 “Statutory Ape”の切れ味鋭いリフとギター・ソロ、“A Vulgar Picture”“Miasma”のドラマティックな展開まで、いずれもビデオが制作された代表曲が並ぶ。トレヴァー・ストルナドは高音のスクリームと低音のグロウルを巧みに往復し、ジョン・ケンパイネンとブライアン・エシュバックのツイン・ギターが鋭利なメロディを描き続ける。デビュー作の勢いをそのままに、バンドの音楽的な核をより研ぎ澄ませた、充実の第2作である。

Miasma is The Black Dahlia Murder's second album, on which they raised melodic death's lethality another notch while carrying over the debut's direction. Built on sharp guitar harmonies and furious rhythms, it concentrates songs full of edge and drive. It is the only album to feature drummer Zach Gibson and the last with bassist Dave Lock. Within a tight roughly-34-minute shape, it packs lean aggression into a dense record. It reached No. 118 on the US Billboard 200 and counts among their early standouts, with cover art using a photograph of downtown Las Vegas. From the incisive riff and guitar solo of "Statutory Ape" to the dramatic development of "A Vulgar Picture" and "Miasma," signature songs — each of which got a video — line up. Trevor Strnad skillfully alternates high screams and low growls, and the twin guitars of John Kempainen and Brian Eschbach keep drawing incisive melodies. Keeping the debut's momentum while further sharpening the band's musical core, it is an accomplished second album.
