『The New Order』は、TESTAMENTが、鋭いリフ、チャック・ビリーの力強い声、そして、アレックス・スコルニックの流麗なリード・ギターを結び付けた、初期を代表するスラッシュ・メタルの傑作だ。デビュー作の成功を受け継ぎ、その音楽性を、さらに洗練させている。スラッシュ特有の、あの速さを核にしながらも、楽曲は、豊かなメロディや、劇的な展開にも、しっかりと意識を向けており、演奏の完成度が、格段に増している。 冒頭“Eerie Inhabitants”から、モッシュを誘う“Into the Pit”、そして、ライヴでの定番曲となった、荘厳な“Disciples of the Watch”、さらに、劇的な名曲“The Preacher”まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。エアロスミスの“Nobody's Fault”のカヴァーも収録された、意欲的な内容だ。緊張感のある曲が並び、バンドの演奏力が、単なる勢いを越えた、確かな説得力を生み出している。 ベイエリア・スラッシュ勢の中でも、際立った、独自の品格と、卓越した演奏技術とを、確立した一枚だ。スコルニックの、メロディックで技巧的なソロは、この時期、さらに冴え渡っている。初期TESTAMENTの、その充実期を象徴する、極めて完成度の高い傑作と言える。スラッシュ・メタル史に残る、名盤の一枚だ。ファン必聴の充実作だ。

The New Order is a masterpiece of early-representative thrash metal, binding sharp riffs, Chuck Billy’s powerful voice and Alex Skolnick’s fluid lead guitar. Inheriting the debut’s success, it further refines its musicality. While keeping thrash’s characteristic speed at its core, the songs firmly turn attention to rich melody and dramatic development too, and their playing polish markedly increases. From the opener “Eerie Inhabitants” and the mosh-inviting “Into the Pit” to the solemn “Disciples of the Watch,” which became a live staple, and the dramatic classic “The Preacher,” every song is engaging. Ambitious content that also includes a cover of Aerosmith’s “Nobody’s Fault.” Tense songs line up, and the band’s playing generates a sure conviction beyond mere momentum. A record that established a distinct character and outstanding playing technique even among the Bay Area thrash camp. Skolnick’s melodic, technical solos are in even sharper form in this period. An extremely polished masterpiece symbolizing early Testament’s fulfilling period — one of the great records in thrash-metal history. An essential, fulfilling work for fans.
