Bust a Nut

『Bust a Nut』は、TESLAが土臭いアメリカン・ハード・ロックの感触を守りながら、より重く引き締まった音像へと踏み出した作品だ。ジェフ・キースのざらついた歌とギターの太い輪郭が、飾り過ぎない曲の骨格を支えている。ブルースやロックンロール由来のしなやかさを残しつつ、リフは以前よりも低く、リズムは粘り強く進んでいく。90年代半ばの音楽的な変化を意識しながらも、バンド本来の手触りは少しも失われていない。 “Mama's Fool”“Need Your Lovin'”“Action Talks”“Shine Away”といった楽曲では、太いリフとキャッチーなメロディが緊密に結び付き、バンドの素朴な強さが最もよく伝わってくる。ジョー・サウスのカヴァー“Games People Play”のような選曲も、バンドのルーツへの愛着を示している。“Solution”“Try So Hard”“Earthmover”“A Lot to Lose”といった楽曲でも、重いリフとしなやかなグルーヴが共存している。この作品を最後にバンドは一時解散へと向かうが、その演奏には衰えの兆しはない。派手な演出よりも演奏の手触りと曲の流れを信じる姿勢が一貫した本作は、この後の一時的な活動休止を前にした、脂の乗り切ったTESLAの姿を鮮やかに刻んだ、力強い一枚である。

Bust a Nut is a record on which TESLA, while keeping the feel of earthy American hard rock, stepped into a heavier, tighter sound. Jeff Keith’s gritty singing and the thick outline of the guitars support the unadorned frame of the songs. Retaining a suppleness derived from blues and rock ’n’ roll, the riffs sit lower than before and the rhythm moves with tenacity. Mindful of the mid-1990s musical changes, the band’s inherent feel is not lost in the least. On “Mama's Fool,” “Need Your Lovin',” “Action Talks” and “Shine Away,” thick riffs and catchy melody join tightly, conveying the band’s plain strength at its best. A song choice like the Joe South cover “Games People Play” shows the band’s attachment to its roots too. Consistently trusting the feel of the playing and the flow of the songs over flashy presentation, it is a powerful record that vividly carves a TESLA in full stride, just before the temporary hiatus to come.
