Talisman

『Talisman』は、ファンクのしなやかさとハード・ロックの力強さを結び、TALISMANの個性を鮮明に示したデビュー作。元イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンのマルセル・ヤコブ(ベース)が、ジョン・ノーラムに没にされたデモを起点に立ち上げ、同じくマルムスティーン人脈のジェフ・スコット・ソートを迎えて完成させた。1989年にストックホルムで録音され、クリストファー・ストールとマッツ・リンドフォシュがギター、マッツ・オラウソンが鍵盤を担当。ヤコブは大半のリズム・ギターとドラム・プログラミングも自ら手がけている。 後年の完成されたイメージから逆算して聴くと粗さも見えるが、その未整理な部分こそが魅力になっている。リフ、歌、リズムがまだ一つの型へ固定される前の勢いがあり、曲ごとの試行錯誤からTALISMANの核が浮かび上がる。冒頭の“Break Your Chains”、流れを変える“System of Power”、終盤の“Great Sandwich”を追うと、曲ごとの役割と温度差が見えやすい。先行シングル“I'll Be Waiting”はスウェーデンで2位を記録し、2か月で3万3千枚を売り上げた。後の代表作へ続く線と、その時期にしかない荒い輝きが同時に残っている。

Talisman is the debut that tied funk's suppleness to hard rock's force and showed the band's identity clearly. Marcel Jacob (bass), formerly of Yngwie Malmsteen's band, launched it from demos John Norum had rejected, and completed it by bringing in Jeff Scott Soto, also from the Malmsteen circle. Recorded in Stockholm in 1989, with Christopher Ståhl and Mats Lindfors on guitars and Mats Olausson on keys; Jacob himself handled most of the rhythm guitars and the drum programming. Heard backward from the polished later image, roughness shows — but that unsettled quality is precisely the appeal. There's momentum from before riffs, vocals and rhythm settled into one fixed mold, and the band's core emerges from the trial and error of each song. Following the opener “Break Your Chains,” the mood-shifting “System of Power,” and the late “Great Sandwich” makes each song's role and temperature easy to see. The advance single “I'll Be Waiting” hit No. 2 in Sweden and the album sold 33,000 copies in two months. Both the line toward their later signature works and a rough shine unique to this period remain here at once.
