『7』は、TALISMANがジェフ・スコット・ソートのソウルフルな歌、マルセル・ヤコブのうねるベース、鋭いギターを核に、グルーヴ重視のメロディック・ハードを鳴らした作品だ。タイトルどおり通算7作目にあたり、2006年に発表された本作が結果的にバンド最後のスタジオ作となった。翌2007年には惜別のツアーが行われている。フレドリック・オーケソンとジェイミー・ボルガーが引き続き支える布陣で、17年に及ぶ活動の集大成となった作品である。曲は派手な速さではなく、リズムの粘りとコーラスの強さで前へ進んでいく。 ファンクやブルースの感覚もさりげなく混ざり、演奏には大人びた余裕がある。冒頭の“Falling”から“Rhyme or Reason”“Forevermore”、締めの“Back 2 the Feeling”まで、長い歩みが自然体で滲む。ヤコブは元々イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンやジョン・ノーラムを支えた名手であり、バンドの中心にいたその人は2009年に世を去った。本作は彼の書いた歌とベースが最後に交わした対話の記録にもなっている。ハード・ロックの力強さと洗練された歌心を、無理なく両立させた一枚である。

7 is the record on which Talisman played groove-focused melodic hard rock around Jeff Scott Soto's soulful singing, Marcel Jacob's swelling bass and sharp guitar. As the title says, it's their seventh album, and this 2006 release turned out to be the band's final studio record; a farewell tour followed in 2007. Fredrik Åkesson and Jamie Borger continue to support it — a summation of seventeen years of work. The songs move forward not through flashy speed but through rhythmic stickiness and the strength of the choruses. Funk and blues sensibilities mix in unobtrusively, and the playing has a grown-up ease. From the opener “Falling” through “Rhyme or Reason” and “Forevermore” to the closing “Back 2 the Feeling,” the long journey seeps in unforced. Jacob was originally the player who backed Yngwie Malmsteen and John Norum, and the man at the band's center died in 2009. This record also became the last record of the conversation between his songs and his bass. A record balancing hard rock's force and refined melodic sense without strain.
