『Orgy of the Damned』は、SLASHが自らのルーツであるブルースの古典へ深く入っていくカヴァー作品だ。2024年に発表された全12曲・約69分の一枚で、豪華なゲスト・ヴォーカルを迎えながらも、中心にあるのはギターの音色と間合いである。クリス・ステイプルトンを迎えた“Oh Well”をはじめ、多彩な歌い手が並ぶ。ロックの大きなステージで培った豪快さを保ちつつ、原曲にある土臭さや余白を丁寧に引き出している。バンド名義の連作から離れ、単独名義に戻った点も、本作の性格をよく表しているだろう。 速いフレーズや派手なソロだけが主役ではない。ひとつの音をどこに置くか、歌の後ろでどの程度支えるかといった感覚が、曲ごとの表情を決めている。若い頃から親しんできた音楽へ、キャリアを重ねた今の手つきで向き合った結果が、そのまま作品になった。ガンズでもコンスピレイターズでもない、もう一つのスラッシュ像がここにある。ブルースを入口にSLASHのギターを聴き直す、味わい深い一枚だ。長いキャリアの中でも異色でありながら、最も素顔に近い作品なのかもしれない。デビュー作から14年、ひとつの円環が閉じたようにも見える。

Orgy of the Damned is a covers record on which Slash goes deep into the blues classics at his own roots. Released in 2024, twelve songs across about 69 minutes; lavish guest vocalists appear, but the center is the guitar's tone and its sense of space. A varied cast lines up, starting with “Oh Well” featuring Chris Stapleton. It keeps the boldness built on rock's big stages while carefully drawing out the earthiness and the breathing room in the original songs. That he stepped away from the band-billed run of records and returned to his own name alone also says a lot about this album's character. Fast phrases and flashy solos aren't the only lead.
