『Threat to Survival』は、太いギター・リフと電子的な質感、そして感情を強く押し出す歌を組み合わせた第5作だ。曲は重さを保ちながらも、サビではメロディを明るく解放し、緊張と救いの両方を作り出している。エリック・バスらが制作に関わり、バンドはより現代的でポップにも通じる音像へと踏み出した。低音のグルーヴや細かな音の加工が現代的な空気を与える一方、中心にあるのはあくまで歌だ。 先行シングル“Cut the Cord”は力強いリフで代表曲となり、“State of My Head”“How Did You Love”も高い人気を得た。怒り、迷い、立ち直ろうとする力が声の表情に刻まれ、アルバムに人間的な近さを与えている。“How Did You Love”のような楽曲では、内省的な問いかけが大きなメロディへと昇華される。“Asking for It”“Black Cadillac”では、太いリフとリズムの推進力が際立つ。従来のハード・ロックにポップやエレクトロの要素を大胆に取り入れた本作は、賛否を呼びつつもバンドの新たな方向性を示した。本作は米ビルボード200で6位を記録した。力強い歌ものを求める人に向く、感情豊かな一枚である。

Threat to Survival is the fifth album, combining thick guitar riffs, electronic texture and singing that strongly pushes out emotion. While the songs keep their weight, the choruses release melody brightly, creating both tension and relief. Eric Bass and others were involved in the making, and the band stepped toward a more modern sound that also reaches toward pop. Low-end grooves and fine sonic processing give a contemporary air, while the center remains, above all, the singing. The lead single "Cut the Cord" became a signature song with its powerful riff, and "State of My Head" and "How Did You Love" also gained wide popularity. Anger, doubt and the strength to recover are marked in the voice's expression, giving the album a human closeness. On songs like "How Did You Love," introspective questioning is sublimated into big melody. The album reached number six on the US Billboard 200. An emotionally rich record for those who want powerful songs.
