『The Sound of Madness』は、SHINEDOWNがアリーナ級のモダン・ロックへと飛躍した第3作だ。ラインナップが刷新され、ギターのザック・マイヤーズとベースのエリック・バス(現在の中核メンバー)が本作から加わった。グラミー受賞プロデューサー、ロブ・カヴァロを迎え、重いギターと劇的なメロディを一段と拡張している。本作はバンド最大の成功作となり、マルチ・プラチナを達成した。 “Second Chance”はバンド最大のヒット曲となり、ジャンルを越えて広く親しまれた。“Sound of Madness”“Devour”“If You Only Knew”も次々にヒットし、“The Crow & the Butterfly”は叙情的な魅力を放つ。スミスの叔父の死を歌った“What a Shame”のように、個人的な感情を込めた楽曲も心に残る。本作は米ビルボード200で8位を記録し、シングル“Second Chance”はマルチ・プラチナに達した。力強いリフと大きなサビ、そして感情の深さが高い次元で結び付いた本作は、SHINEDOWNを一躍トップ・アクトへと押し上げた重要作である。

The Sound of Madness is the third album, on which Shinedown leapt to arena-scale modern rock. The lineup was renewed, with guitarist Zach Myers and bassist Eric Bass — the current core members — joining from this record. With Grammy-winning producer Rob Cavallo, it further expands heavy guitar and dramatic melody. It became the band's most successful album, reaching multi-platinum. "Second Chance" became the band's biggest hit, widely loved across genres. "Sound of Madness," "Devour" and "If You Only Knew" all became hits in turn, and "The Crow & the Butterfly" gives off a lyrical charm. Songs charged with personal emotion linger too, like "What a Shame," about the death of Smith's uncle. Binding powerful riffs, big choruses and emotional depth at a high level, it is an important record that pushed Shinedown up to a top act.
