Us and Them

『Us and Them』は、重いギターとブレント・スミスの歌を軸に、SHINEDOWNがドラマティックなモダン・ハード・ロックをさらに推し進めた第2作だ。デビュー作と同じく、ジェイソン・トッド、ブラッド・スチュワート、バリー・カーチによる初期ラインナップで制作された。前作の勢いを受け継ぎながら、より重厚で緊張感のあるサウンドへと深化している。オリジナル・ラインナップによる最後の作品でもある。 “Save Me”は力強いリフと感情的なサビで代表曲となり、“I Dare You”も高い人気を得た。“Beyond the Sun”“Shed Some Light”のような楽曲では、内省的なメロディと重さが結び付いている。スミスの歌はより表現の幅を広げ、怒りや葛藤を大きなコーラスへと変えていく。全米ツアーを精力的にこなしたバンドは、この時期に着実に支持層を広げていった。“Trade Yourself In”のような楽曲では、緊張感と叙情が鋭く交差する。本作はゴールド認定を獲得し、バンドの評価を確かなものにした。この後ラインナップが大きく変わり、SHINEDOWNは次の章へと進むことになる。重さと歌心を両立させた、充実の一枚である。

Us and Them is the second album, on which Shinedown pushed its dramatic modern hard rock further around heavy guitar and Brent Smith's singing. As with the debut, it was made with the early lineup of Jasin Todd, Brad Stewart and Barry Kerch. Carrying on the momentum of the debut, it deepens into a weightier, more tense sound. It is also the last album by the original lineup. "Save Me" became a signature song with its powerful riff and emotional chorus, and "I Dare You" also gained wide popularity. On songs like "Beyond the Sun" and "Shed Some Light," introspective melody and weight are bound together. Smith's singing widens its range, turning anger and struggle into big choruses. The album earned gold certification and made the band's reputation firm. Afterward the lineup changed greatly, and Shinedown moved into its next chapter. Balancing weight and songcraft, it is an accomplished record.
