Lonesome Crow

『Lonesome Crow』は、後年のSCORPIONSが確立する鋭いメロディック・ハード・ロックとは少し距離を置き、長い展開、暗いギターの陰影、サイケデリックな漂流感を前面に出したデビュー作である。ルドルフ・シェンカーと若きマイケル・シェンカーのギターは、完成されたツイン・リードの様式を見せる以前の段階にありながら、リフの押し出しと即興的な伸びの両方を備えている。クラウス・マイネの歌はまだ荒削りで、その若さが曲に切迫感とどこか不安定な魅力を与える。リズム隊も、定型的なビートに収まらず、曲の空気が変わるたびに重心を動かしていく。 “I'm Going Mad”の重い踏み出し、“It All Depends”の揺らぐムード、“In Search of the Peace of Mind”の長い陰影、そして表題曲のゆっくり広がる緊張は、バンドが安易な答えを選ばず、未知の場所を探っていたことを伝える。楽曲は時に粗く、構成も後年ほど整理されてはいない。だが、その未完成さは欠点ではなく、五人が音を手探りで押し広げる瞬間をそのまま残した証でもある。ドイツのハード・ロックが国際的な輪郭を得る前夜の空気と、後のSCORPIONSにつながるギターへの執着を同時に聴かせる、独特の熱を持つ原点である。

Lonesome Crow is the Scorpions debut, far removed from the sharp melodic hard rock the band would later make its own. Long structures, dark guitar shading, and psychedelic drift stand at the front. Rudolf Schenker and a very young Michael Schenker had not yet arrived at the polished language of twin-guitar hard rock, but their playing already combines the force of a riff with the stretch of improvisation. Klaus Meine’s voice is still raw, and that youth gives the songs urgency and a compelling instability. The rhythm section also avoids simply holding a fixed beat, shifting the center of gravity whenever the mood changes. The heavy first step of “I’m Going Mad,” the unsettled atmosphere of “It All Depends,” the extended shadows of “In Search of the Peace of Mind,” and the slowly widening tension of the title track make clear that the group was looking for unknown territory rather than choosing easy answers. The material can be rough, and its structures are less organized than later Scorpions work. Yet that incompleteness is not a flaw. It preserves the moment when five musicians were pushing their sound outward by touch and instinct. It carries both the prehistory of German hard rock’s international profile and the guitar obsession that would later define Scorpions, making it a singular and vital beginning.
