『Moving Pictures』は、RUSHがこれまで培ってきた複雑で高度な演奏力を、より短く、明快な楽曲の中へと見事に凝縮した、キャリア最大の代表作だ。ゲディー・リーのベースとシンセサイザー、アレックス・ライフソンの硬質なギター、そしてニール・パートの精密なドラムが、互いを力強く押し上げながら、強烈な推進力を生み出している。プログレッシヴな知性と、大衆的な魅力とを、完璧に両立させた金字塔である。
冒頭を飾る、バンド最大のアンセム“Tom Sawyer”の電子的な緊張感、疾走する“Red Barchetta”の爽快なドラマ、超絶技巧のインストゥルメンタル“YYZ”、そして大きなメロディを持つ“Limelight”まで、どの曲にも、卓越した技術と、確かな歌心とが同居している。“Witch Hunt”のような曲も、アルバムに深みを与えている。
知的で複雑な構築性を全く失うことなく、より広い聴き手のもとへと届いた点に、本作の歴史的な重要性がある。プログレッシヴ・ロックの一つの理想形とも言える完成度は、今なお色褪せることがない。ロック史に燦然と輝く、RUSHの、そしてジャンルそのものを代表する、不朽の名盤と言える。
