Legendary Tales

『Legendary Tales』は、RHAPSODY OF FIRE(当時のバンド名はラプソディー)が、クラシカルで壮麗な鍵盤、疾走する速いギター、そして英雄譚のようなファンタジーの物語とを、見事に一体化させた、鮮烈なデビュー作だ。イタリアから登場した本作は、ネオクラシカルなギターと、映画音楽的なオーケストレーションとを融合させた、独自のスタイルを、早くも確立している。楽曲は、短い導入から、大きく壮大なコーラスへと広がり、聴き手を、まるで架空の王国へと連れて行くかのように、力強く展開していく。 冒頭のインストゥルメンタルから、疾走する“Warrior of Ice”へと至る展開、そして“Rage of the Winter”のドラマ性、さらに“Flames of Revenge”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Forest of Unicorns”“Virgin Skies”のような曲も、作品の壮大な世界観を伝えている。ファビオ・リオーネの、オペラティックで力強い歌声が、その物語世界を、力強く牽引している。 後に、壮大な物語として展開していく「エメラルド・ソード・サーガ」の、その幕開けを告げる、極めて重要な一枚だ。ルカ・トゥリッリと、アレックス・スタロポリの、卓越した作曲能力が、すでに全開となっている。シンフォニック・パワー・メタルという、一つのジャンルの、その方向性を決定づけた、力強く意欲的な名デビュー作と言える。バンドの壮大な物語がここから始まる。

Legendary Tales is a vivid debut on which Rhapsody of Fire (then named Rhapsody) splendidly unites classical, grand keyboards, speeding fast guitar and heroic-tale fantasy narrative. Emerging from Italy, it early establishes its own style fusing neoclassical guitar and film-score orchestration. The songs spread from a short introduction to big, grand choruses, developing powerfully as if taking the listener to a fictional kingdom. From the development from the opening instrumental to the speeding “Warrior of Ice” and the drama of “Rage of the Winter” to a cut like “Flames of Revenge,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Forest of Unicorns” and “Virgin Skies” convey the work’s grand world. Fabio Lione’s operatic, powerful voice powerfully drives that narrative world. An extremely important record announcing the opening of the “Emerald Sword Saga,” which would later unfold as a grand story. Luca Turilli and Alex Staropoli’s outstanding compositional ability is already in full bloom. A powerful, ambitious debut that defined the direction of the symphonic-power-metal genre — the band’s grand story begins here.
