Primal Fear

セルフタイトルの『Primal Fear』は、高く突き抜けるヴォーカルと、重量級のギター・リフとを、真正面からぶつけ合い、正統派ヘヴィ・メタルの、あの純粋な興奮を、ストレートに提示したデビュー作だ。元ガンマ・レイの、ラルフ・シーパースと、シナーのマット・シナーが中心となって結成された本作は、ジューダス・プリーストを彷彿とさせる、王道のジャーマン・ヘヴィ・メタルを、力強く鳴らしている。楽曲は、スピードと、重量との、その両方を兼ね備え、サビでは、大きく開かれていく。 冒頭の“Chainbreaker”の力強い推進力、そして“Silver & Gold”のドラマ性、さらに“Formula One”の攻撃性まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Promised Land”“Nine Lives”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。シーパースの、あの圧倒的なハイトーン・ヴォーカルは、当時、ロブ・ハルフォードの後継とも目された、その実力を、遺憾なく発揮している。 派手な実験や、装飾に頼るのではなく、あくまで、正統派メタルの、確かな様式美と、その熱量とで、真っ向から勝負した一枚だ。バンドの、揺るぎないコンセプトが、最初から、はっきりと確立されている。後に、ジャーマン・パワー・メタルを代表するバンドへと成長していく、その輝かしいキャリアの原点となった、力強く正統的な名デビュー作と言える。ファン必聴の一枚だ。

The self-titled Primal Fear is a debut that collides high, piercing vocals and heavy guitar riffs head-on, straightforwardly presenting the pure excitement of traditional heavy metal. Made with the ex-Gamma Ray Ralf Scheepers and Sinner’s Mat Sinner at the center, it powerfully sounds straight-path German heavy metal evoking Judas Priest. The songs hold both speed and weight, opening widely in the choruses. From the powerful drive of the opener “Chainbreaker” and the drama of “Silver & Gold” to the aggression of “Formula One,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Promised Land” and “Nine Lives” convey the work’s fullness. Scheepers’s overwhelming high vocals, then regarded as a possible successor to Rob Halford, fully display his ability.
