『Poison'd!』は、POISONがロック、パワー・ポップ、サザン・ロックの名曲を、軽快で親しみやすい演奏へ置き換えたカヴァー集だ。ブレット・マイケルズ(ヴォーカル)、C.C.デヴィル(ギター)、ボビー・ダール(ベース)、リッキー・ロケット(ドラム)という布陣で制作された。派手なコーラスと陽気なリズムが、多彩な選曲をバンドの色へ自然に染めていく。 キッスの“Rock and Roll All Nite”、スウィートの“Little Willy”、グランド・ファンクの“We're an American Band”など、彼らのルーツとなった名曲が並ぶ。ローリング・ストーンズやキャーズの楽曲まで、幅広い時代とジャンルから選ばれている。原曲への敬意を保ちながらも、演奏は肩の力が抜けている。デヴィッド・ボウイの“Suffragette City”やザ・カーズの“Just What I Needed”など、意外性のある選曲も楽しい。原曲を大きく作り替えるのではなく、POISONらしい陽気なエネルギーで包み込むのが持ち味だ。バンドが自らの音楽的ルーツに敬意を表した、愛情あふれる企画作でもある。キャリアの総括ではなく、メンバーが音楽を楽しむ感覚をそのまま伝える、気持ちのよい一枚である。

Poison'd! is a covers collection on which Poison replaced classic songs of rock, power pop and southern rock with light, approachable playing. It was made with the lineup of Bret Michaels (vocals), C.C. DeVille (guitar), Bobby Dall (bass) and Rikki Rockett (drums). Flashy choruses and cheerful rhythms naturally dye the varied selection in the band's colors. Kiss's "Rock and Roll All Nite," Sweet's "Little Willy," Grand Funk's "We're an American Band" and other classics that were their roots line up. From the Rolling Stones to the Cars, the choices span a wide range of eras and genres. While keeping respect for the originals, the playing is relaxed. Not a summary of a career, it is a pleasant record that conveys, as is, the members' sense of enjoying music.
