Soul

『Soul』は、2024年1月5日に自主レーベルのパリッシュ・エンターテインメントから出た全8曲の作品である。曲数には注意がいる。当時の宣伝資料は「10曲入り」と書いたが、同じ資料が並べた曲目は8曲しかなく、発売当日に全編を聴いた評者も8曲と明記している。実際は8曲だ。パリッシュ本人はこの一枚を、自分にとって非常に個人的なもので、関係性や困難な経験、そしてそこを抜ける力を自分の内側に見つけることを歌っていると説明した。 先行シングルだった“Poetry Glass”はブレイクダウンを伴うメタルコア寄りの手触りで、以降もその質感が続く。“Stuck in the Dark”のバラード、“Fist Into the Air”の押し出しを経て、締めの“I'm Still Here”は借り物である。ディズニー『トレジャー・プラネット』の曲で、原曲を歌ったのはグー・グー・ドールズのジョン・レズニック。カヴァーで名を上げた男が、自作アルバムの最後をカヴァーで閉じている。発売から24時間と経たずに米国・フィンランド・ドイツ・チェコで1位に立ち、大手レーベルの資金なしでそれをやってのけた。前年8月のヴァッケン出演が口伝えに広がった結果でもある。

Soul, released on 5 January 2024 on his own Parrish Entertainment, runs eight songs. The count needs care. The promotional material of the time called it a ten-track album, yet the same document listed only eight titles, and a reviewer who heard the whole thing on release day wrote plainly that there are eight. Eight is right. Parrish described the record as a very personal one, saying the songs explore relationships, hard experiences, and finding the strength within yourself to get through them. The advance single "Poetry Glass" has a metalcore feel with breakdowns, and that texture carries on. Past the ballad "Stuck in the Dark" and the shove of "Fist Into the Air," the closer "I'm Still Here" is borrowed: it comes from Disney's Treasure Planet, and John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls sang the original. A man who made his name on covers ends his own album with one. Inside twenty-four hours of release it stood at number one in the United States, Finland, Germany and the Czech Republic — done with no major label money behind it, and helped along by word of mouth from his Wacken appearance the previous August.
