Under Cover

『Under Cover』は、オジー・オズボーンが自らのルーツである60〜70年代のロック名曲を取り上げた、企画性の強いカバー・アルバムだ。同年に発表されたボックス・セット『Prince of Darkness』に収録された音源を軸に、新たに録音された数曲を加えて構成されている。プロデュースはマーク・ハドソンが手掛け、原曲の骨格を尊重しつつ、オジーならではの声質と質感で往年の名曲を再解釈した、敬愛に満ちた一枚となっている。 ジョー・ウォルシュの“Rocky Mountain Way”、ビートルズの“In My Life”、MOUNTAINの“Mississippi Queen”、KING CRIMSONの“21st Century Schizoid Man”など、選曲にはオジーの音楽的な出自と嗜好が色濃く反映されている。ジョン・レノンの“Working Class Hero”では原曲の陰影を、ROLLING STONESの“Sympathy for the Devil”では劇的な高揚を、それぞれオジー流に描き出している。オリジナル作とは異なる企画盤ながら、彼が影響を受けた音楽的背景を知るうえで興味深く、ベテランが原点へ立ち返った遊び心あふれる作品として楽しめる一枚である。

Under Cover is a strongly conceptual covers album on which Ozzy Osbourne took up classic 1960s–70s rock songs that form his own roots. It is built around recordings included on the box set Prince of Darkness, released the same year, with several newly recorded tracks added. Produced by Mark Hudson, it respects the frames of the originals while reinterpreting these classics through Ozzy’s distinctive voice and texture, making for a record full of affection. The song choices — Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way,” the Beatles’ “In My Life,” Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen,” King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man” — strongly reflect Ozzy’s musical background and tastes. On John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero” he draws out the original’s shadow, and on the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” its dramatic lift, each in his own way. Though a concept record apart from his original albums, it is intriguing for understanding the musical influences behind him, and enjoyable as a playful work on which a veteran returns to his origins.
