The Unforgiven

The Unforgiven is a work on which Michael Schenker, around sharp riffs and singing lead guitar, carefully builds his melodic hard rock. Rather than merely showing off speed and technique, playing that values the beautiful afterglow of the phrases and the overall rise and fall of the songs stays deeply in the ear. Within a sturdy, steady band sound, his guitar always moves freely as if in conversation with the vocal melody. From the powerful drive of the opener “Rude Awakening” to the lyrical “In and Out of Time” and “Pilot of Your Soul,” every song is full of Schenker’s rich melodic sense, while cuts like “Hello Angel” and “Forever and More” give the work deep shading. It is built to let you listen carefully on the quality of the songs and the deftness of the playing, over flash. Its appeal is giving the whole work a sure depth with shaded, beautiful melody while faithfully keeping the traditional hard-rock style.
