Arachnophobiac

『Arachnophobiac』は、マイケル・シェンカーの滑らかで美しいギター・メロディと、太く力強いハード・ロックのリフとを、巧みに組み立てた作品だ。高度な技巧を、ただ誇示するだけではなく、歌とギターとが、互いの余白を効果的に生かし合い、曲ごとに、自然な高揚感を作り上げていく。前作の充実を受け継ぎ、より力強く、直進的なサウンドを追求した一枚である。 冒頭“Evermore”の叙情、そして表題曲“Arachnophobiac”の攻撃性まで、収録曲はいずれも、シェンカーのギターの魅力に満ちている。“Rock and Roll Believer”のキャッチーさ、“Sands of Time”“Fatal Strike”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。叙情的で美しいフレーズと、直進するリズムとが同居し、彼の長年の様式を、軽やかに更新している。 メロディを、実に豊かに弾かせるギタリストとしてのシェンカーの魅力が、端正で洗練された演奏の中で、際立って輝いている点が本作の魅力だ。派手さに頼るのではなく、フレーズそのものの良さと、確かな演奏力で聴かせる作りである。ギター・ヒーローとしての魅力が全開となった、充実したハード・ロック作品と言える。安定感のある佳作だ。

Arachnophobiac is a work on which Michael Schenker deftly builds smooth, beautiful guitar melody and thick, powerful hard-rock riffs. Rather than merely showing off high technique, singing and guitar effectively use each other’s space, creating a natural lift from song to song. Inheriting the previous album’s fullness, it pursues a more powerful, straight-ahead sound. From the lyricism of the opener “Evermore” to the aggression of the title track “Arachnophobiac,” every song is full of the appeal of Schenker’s guitar, while the catchiness of “Rock and Roll Believer” and cuts like “Sands of Time” and “Fatal Strike” convey the work’s fullness. Lyrical, beautiful phrases and straight rhythm coexist, lightly updating his long-held style. Its appeal is how Schenker’s charm as a guitarist who plays melody so richly shines out within trim, refined playing. Rather than relying on flash, it is built to win on the goodness of the phrases themselves and sure playing. On which the appeal of a guitar hero is in full bloom, it is a fulfilling hard-rock work — a steady, fine record.
