『Generation Nothing』は、METAL CHURCHが硬く刻むギター、骨太のリズム、荒々しいヴォーカルを前面に出し、正統派アメリカン・ヘヴィ・メタルの力を改めて確認した作品だ。ロニー・マンローがヴォーカルを担った時期の締めくくりにあたる本作を経て、バンドはのちにマイク・ハウの復帰という大きな転機を迎えることになる。楽曲は複雑さよりもリフの押し出しを重視し、地面を踏みしめるように力強く進んでいく、飾り気のない直球のメタルを貫いた実直な一枚である。 “Bulletproof”“Dead City”“Generation Nothing”“Suiciety”“Scream”といった楽曲では、ミドル・テンポの重さと、時折見せる鋭い加速がアルバムに明快なメリハリを与える。“Noises In The Wall”“Jump The Gun”“Hits Keep Comin'”“Close To The Bone”“The Media Horse”といった楽曲でも、頑丈なリフと直球のヘヴィネスが一貫して貫かれている。カート・ヴァンダーフーフのリフは相変わらず頑丈で、古典的なメタルの意地を強く感じさせる。流行に流されず、バンドが信じるヘヴィ・メタルの核を真正面から鳴らし切った、頼もしい一枚である。

Generation Nothing is an album on which METAL CHURCH foregrounds hard-chugging guitars, sturdy rhythm and raw vocals to reaffirm the power of traditional American heavy metal. Marking the close of the period when Ronny Munroe handled vocals, it precedes the band’s later major turning point: the return of Mike Howe. Valuing riff push over complexity and advancing forcefully as if planting each step, it is an earnest record that holds to plain, straight-ahead metal. On “Bulletproof,” “Dead City,” “Generation Nothing,” “Suiciety” and “Scream,” mid-tempo weight and occasional sharp acceleration give the album clear dynamics. On “Noises In The Wall,” “Jump The Gun,” “Hits Keep Comin’,” “Close To The Bone” and “The Media Horse” too, sturdy riffs and straight-ahead heaviness run consistently throughout. Kurt Vanderhoof’s riffs are as sturdy as ever, strongly conveying a classic-metal stubbornness. Undistracted by trends, it plays the core of heavy metal the band believes in head-on — a dependable record.
